After then-UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out due to injury, Nate Diaz got his wish. Having called out Conor McGregor in late 2015, Diaz was inserted into the UFC 196 main event in March 2016.

Despite taking the fight on 11 days notice, Diaz pulled off one of the biggest upsets in one of the biggest nights in MMA history. The fight, which ended with Diaz submitting the Irish star, would result in a rematch later that year, which McGregor won via majority decision.
