Matt Serra is just one of the two fighters to ever defeat Georges St-Pierre. And if you had been asked, at the time, to choose who would beat St-Pierre, let’s be honest: Serra wouldn’t be your first pick.

GSP was 13-1 at the time and had just captured the UFC welterweight title, avenging his sole loss to Matt Hughes to earn it. Serra was inconsistent. He was 5-4 in his previous nine fights prior to fighting GSP, so the thought of GSP losing was hardly a thing. But Serra made it a reality when he beat one of the best fighters in MMA history in the first round.

Of course, GSP beat the brakes off him in the rematch, and went on to have an unparalleled career, setting a record for welterweight title defenses, claiming a second title, and retiring with zero unavenged losses.

Still, Serra proved you just had to be the better man on a single night.
