There are many narratives that can be delved into ahead of the UFC 264 main event between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor. But differentiating between which storylines are more relevant than others is difficult at this juncture. In a day and age in the sport where fighters and the storylines are overexposed, sometimes it makes more sense to strip all of the bells and whistles and view this fight for what it is. Which is nothing more than a contest between two elite UFC lightweights.
The persona and the circus that surrounds McGregor completely overshadows the fact that he is one of the greatest mixed martial artists on the planet. At this point in his career, it’s hard to know if he will ever get the proper credit in this department. Poirier is a technician who hit the pinnacle of his success late in his career, a true feel good story in MMA.
Instead of being focused on where a win or loss puts each respective fighter in their career, or the media hoopla in the lead up to this contest. Just sit back and enjoy the result of whatever happens when these two get locked in the cage together for the third time.
