Conor McGregor just can’t catch a break.
UFC CEO Dana White confirmed Sunday that McGregor is expected to miss approximately a year after suffering a serious knee injury in his UFC 329 showdown with Max Holloway, dealing another crushing blow to one of the most anticipated comebacks in MMA history.
White was asked when fans can expect McGregor to return.
“I have no idea. We had him on FaceTime tonight ringside,” White said at his post-Zuffa boxing press conference on Sunday night.
“But, you know, Conor McGregor’s out for a year.”
It’s yet another devastating setback for McGregor, who had not competed since suffering a gruesome leg injury in his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. That loss, ruled a TKO due to doctor’s stoppage, sidelined the former two-division champion for nearly five years as he worked toward a return.
McGregor’s comeback against Holloway was one of the most anticipated fights of the year, drawing massive attention from fans eager to see whether “The Notorious” could reclaim his place among the sport’s elite. Instead, the bout ended in heartbreaking fashion after just 69 seconds when McGregor appeared to suffer a serious knee injury during an exchange.
The injury adds another lengthy recovery to the Irish star’s career. Ironically, McGregor also tore his ACL during his first meeting with Holloway in 2013, making this the second time a fight against the former featherweight champion has resulted in the same significant injury.
