Scouting Prospects for the Contender Series Season 5: Part 1

David Onama Credit: FAC

David Onama

Lightweight | 24 | Lees Summit, Missouri, US but born in Kampala, Uganda | 7-0 | Win Streak: 17 | 4 KO/TKOs, 2 Submissions’

Onama is one of the many bright stars coming out of Glory MMA & Fitness, which is a gym quickly gaining a reputation for success under the tutelage of James Krause. Onama has only been a pro for three years but previously as an amateur, he went 10-0. Now 7-0 as a pro he’s 17-0 combined. He’s a perfect fit for Dana White’s Contender Series and I have no doubt he’s on the UFC’s radar.

Maikel Perez

Flyweight | 37 | Huntington Beach, California, US but born in Cienfuegos, Cuba | 7-2 | Win Streak: 1 | 1 KO/TKO, 4 Submissions

Perez should at least be known to the UFC brass when UFC lightweight contender Beneil Dariush calls for his shot in the UFC. After Dariush beat Diego Ferreira, in his post-fight interview he asked the UFC to give his teammate Perez a shot. At 37-years-old it is unlikely we see that debut. With that said to at least give him an opportunity on the Contender Series would be fair. Perez competed in the men’s freestyle (55 KG) at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He’s an LFA vet who was in a war with UFC flyweight title challenger Brandon Moreno. Perez does have wins against Sid Bice and TUF veteran Charlie Alaniz. If you ignore the age he would be a fun spot on the Contender Series.
