Former bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt faced off against Adrian Yanez as part of the UFC 329 preliminary card on Saturday, with “No Love” looking to build on a recent win.
Gabrandt had picked up a victory over Xiao Long back in March to snap a two-fight skid, while Yanez was 1-3-1 across his last five, and entering off a loss against Ricky Simon, also this past March.
Garbrandt came out aggressive to start the fight swinging wild hooks and pressing Yanez to the fence. Yanez was able to circle away and avoid trouble, looking to land a big right hand of his own. Garbrandt crashed forward with a lunging left hook that connected clean, but ate a right hand from Yanez. Garbrandt tried to recover, while exchanging big blows in the pocket again with Yanez.
Moments later a beautiful right hook landed flush on the chin of Cody Garbrandt, a blow that sent the former champ stumbling backwards. Another short right hand dropped Garbrandt as Referee Herb Dean called a stop to the fight.
Following the TKO victory, Yanez stated that he is ready to make another run up the rankings at 135-pounds, shouting out his great camp in Dallas, Texas.
Official Result: Adrian Yanez def. Cody Garbrandt by TKO (punches), Round 1, 2:47
