Damian Pinas needed just one moment to change everything at UFC 329. After being outworked for stretches by Cesar Almeida, the dangerous middleweight uncorked a thunderous rigth hand shot that erased the deficit in an instant, delivering the biggest finish of his career and putting the rest of the division on notice.
Round 1 – Pinas opened the fight by chopping at Almeida’s lead leg with back-to-back calf kicks, but Almeida answered immediately with one of his own. Knowing he was giving up a significant reach advantage, Almeida stayed disciplined, attacking the body and legs while refusing to get drawn into a battle at long range.
Pinas mixed in a front kick to the body and continued to punish Almeida’s lead leg, ripping three heavy calf kicks in succession that briefly forced the Brazilian to switch stances. Almeida responded by finding a home for his straight right while continuing to invest in body kicks.
One of those body kicks was caught by Pinas, who nearly turned it into a takedown. Instead, Almeida reversed the position and dragged Pinas to the mat before pinning him against the fence after Pinas worked back to his feet, effectively taking away the Dutch striker’s reach advantage until Pinas finally broke free.
The second round picked up where the first left off, with both fighters trading calf kicks before Almeida settled back into his steady body attack. As the round wore on, Almeida began to find his timing, reading Pinas’ offense and dictating the pace with patient pressure.
Sensing the momentum slipping away, Pinas started taking bigger risks, and it paid off in dramatic fashion.
A crushing right hand shot landed flush, dropping Almeida instantly and ending the fight on the spot. A statement knockout from the surging middleweight, one that put the rest of the division on notice.
