10 Bantamweight Prospects the UFC Should Sign in 2023

John “Hollywood” Sweeney

27 | 5’7″ | Fountain Inn, South Carolina, US | 12-3 | 7 Finishes | 5 KO/TKOs, 2 Submissions | Combined Opponents’ Record: 67-35 | Best Win – Ary Farias (12-3)

After dropping two in a row, John Sweenedy has won his last six, which is the biggest streak of his career. He’s beat tough regional guys like Ary Farias, Ricardo Dias, and Keith Lee. He’s also beaten a pair of former UFC fighters in Cole Smith and Leonardo Morales. Sweeney is a good fighter, talks some shit, and is an entertaining fighter through and through. He would be a good signing from the UFC.

Sweeney is labelled more as a wrestler, but has striking in his arsenal as well. As a matter of fact, he’s been training for years at Upstate Karate, for his whole career, with Stephen Thompson. Sweeney is also a black belt in karate, which he earned when he was 21. Sweeney is a forward pressure fighter that has good hands and an even better ground game. Knockout power, a diverse kicking game, strong wrestling, solid jiu-jitsu, and a good gas tank. Sweeney has truly come full circle in his career.

“My style is made for the big show. I’m always looking for the finish,” he told Cageside Press recently. “I love to stand and strike but I can’t and won’t be held down to a boring fight. I’ll do everything in my power every single time to make the fight exciting and something the fans and UFC staff won’t forget each and every time!!”
