Matt Hamill Gets Back in the Win Column with 38 Second Drubbing of Luiz Cane

Former UFC light heavyweight Matt Hamill finally had his hand raised for the first time since 2012 last night.

Hamill was one of the great stories of the UFC a few years back. “The Hammer” — featured in a 2010 film of the same name — was born deaf, overcame adversity to become a three-time NCAA Division III National Champion, and made his way into the UFC, competing on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter. While he couldn’t finish his run on the show (due to injury), he did compete at the finale, picking up a win over fellow cast mate Jesse Forbes.

From there, Hamill went on an impressive run, winning two Fight of the Night awards as well as a knockout of the night. He would score wins over names like Tim Boetsch, Mark Munoz, Tito Ortiz (his coach on the show), and some guy named Jon Jones. Yes, that Jon Jones, albeit by a DQ due to illegal elbows. Regardless, Hamill won more than he lost until running into Rampage Jackson and Alexander Gustafsson in back-to-back fights in 2011. He lost both, leading to a brief retirement. That proved to be short-lived: after just over a year, he returned to pick up a win over Roger Hollett in a plodding, ugly affair, then dropped another loss to Thiago Silva.

That spelled the end of Hamill’s UFC career. He has since bounced around smaller promotions, suffering a trio of losses in WSOF, Venator FC, and Combates Americas — but last night, “The Hammer” got back in the win column in a big way with a thirty-eight second pounding of Luiz Cane. The fight went down as the main event of Fight 2 Night 2 in the city of Foz do Iguacu in Parana, Brazil. Check out the action in the clip above.

The win means Matt Hamill may have extended his career just a little: despite flirting with retirement over the years, the 40 year old keeps plugging along. Whether he continues fighting or not, it’s nice to see “The Hammer” get another moment in the sun.
