A pair of rising lightweights looking to make some noise met inside the octagon at UFC Sacramento on Saturday night. MarQuel Mederos and Mason Jones entered the matchup with plenty to prove as both looked to take another step forward in a crowded 155 pound division.
Both fighters met in the center of the cage to start round one exchanging in the pocket early. Jones pressured forward midway through the round behind a nice jab. Entering the clinch, Jones pressed the fight to the fence where he was able to land a few solid punches. Mederos started to retreat as Jones found a rhythm on the feet. Near the end of the round Jones landed a solid leg kick that momentarily knocked Mederos off his feet.
The second started with Jones moving forward, with Mederos throwing crisp combinations to the head and body trying to keep Jones away. Mederos caught Jones clean with a beautiful elbow in close. Jones was wobbled and out on his feet as Mederos pounced on his opponent and closed the show by TKO against the fence.
This was a massive moment for Mederos who stopped a rising contender on a long winning streak. Mederos is now on an 11 fight unbeaten streak of his own, earning his first finish in the UFC octagon.
Official Result: MarQuel Mederos def. Mason Jones by TKO (elbows and punches), Round 2, 2:07
