Bantamweight Mark Vologdin made his promotional debut at UFC Winnipeg in a 139lb catchweight fight with John Castaneda.
Originally scheduled for bantamweight, the bout was moved to a catchweight prior to weigh-ins, reportedly due to a fighter struggling with his weight cut. Castaneda happened to be the last fighter to weigh in on Friday.
The fight opened with Castaneda establishing range, working both high and low kicks. Vologdin inched forward, looking to find his timing behind a few leg kicks of his own. Castaneda briefly pressured him to the cage, but Vologdin circled out and answered with a heavy outside leg kick. He followed with a sharp jab, though he absorbed a groin strike in the exchange.
Once action resumed, Castaneda returned to his kicking game, going low and then high, the latter partially blocked. Vologdin remained hesitant to fully commit in the opening round, while Castaneda stuck and moved effectively. On two occasions, Castaneda also clinched when Vologdin tried to burst forward. With a minute left, Castaneda landed a clean left cross, prompting Vologdin to pick up his aggression. He responded with jabs that bloodied Castaneda’s nose and even attempted a rolling thunder at the horn.
Round two saw Vologdin land a solid right hand as he battled through the size disadvantage. Castaneda continued to manage distance well, picking Vologdin apart from range. Vologdin mixed in wrestling, securing two takedowns, but couldn’t keep Castaneda grounded. The pace began to rise, with both fighters finding success. Castaneda landed a strong combination, though it was marred by an accidental groin strike that ultimately led to a point deduction. After the restart, the tempo stayed high. Castaneda pressed forward with kicks and knees, increasingly targeting the body and forcing Vologdin to deal with a variety of looks through the end of the round.
With the fight still close, both fighters entered round three needing a strong finish. As in the previous rounds, they began by trading leg kicks. Castaneda quickly found success with a clean combination and started backing Vologdin toward the cage, unleashing sustained flurries. Vologdin showed clear signs of fatigue but continued to fire back. Castaneda mixed his offense well—attacking high and low while incorporating knees—and defended a takedown attempt. Vologdin returned the favor by stuffing one of Castaneda’s shots, but his own attempts became increasingly desperate as the output disparity grew.
In the final minute, Castaneda was landing at will. Vologdin made one last effort with another rolling thunder attempt, but Castaneda read it easily. With seconds remaining, Vologdin called for a brawl, and the two exchanged until the horn, with Vologdin managing to secure a late takedown just before the end.
Official Results: John Castañeda vs. Mark Vologdin declared Majority Draw (29-27 Castaneda, 28-28, 28-28)
