One of two PFL World Tournament lightweight semifinals at Friday’s PFL Wichita found former Bellator champ Brent Primus paired up with another of the now-defunct promotion’s alums, Alfie Davis.

The Wichita card had already produced some exciting finishes, and Primus vs. Davis started out very active. Having stuffed the first takedown attempt of the fight, Davis tried to pull off a jumping attack; when that failed to produce a quick finish, the pair opted to swing.

In a Brent Primus fight, going to the ground is often inevitable, and that was certainly the case on Friday. An omoplata attempt by Primus fizzled once they got there, but the former Bellator lightweight champion did transition to the top, landing some smashing elbows and opening up a gash on the side of Alfie Davis’s head.

Davis would look for a jump knee more than once in round two, while winging left hands from the outside. Davis circled, trying to lure Primus in, but when he did close the distance, Brent Primus was able to latch onto a leg and push Davis to the fence. Davis would fend off that takedown attempt however, and pulled free when Primus dropped to his back, trying to drag him down. When Primus clinched up again, Davis was again able to break free, staying on his feet the entirety of the round.

One of those knees by Alfie Davis finally landed to the body with roughly a minute remaining in the second frame, with a left hook training it. Moments later, a spinning elbow caught Primus, and Davis started to turn up the heat, firing lefts, rights, body shots and even a spinning heel kick (the latter of which sailed wide). He’d swing all the way to the horn, but Primus wouldn’t go down.

After a rough end to the second round, Brent Primus’s recovery was going to be a question heading into the third. Davis was active early, but Primus was finally able to get Davis to his back just a couple of minutes in. Primus was on top, perilously close to moving to full mount. Davis was not winning points off his back, but was able to fend off any potential finish. He was also able to get out from under Primus, and even ended the round with a sort of modified somersault kick.

That might have been enough to sway the judges, who scored the fight two rounds to one in favour of Davis. Sending him to the World Tournament finals, opposite the winner of Gadzhi Rabadanov vs. Kevin Lee.

Official Result: Alfie Davis def. Brent Primus by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
