UFC lightweight Gabe Green really leaned on his faith as he made his return to the octagon after two years away to earn a victory over Matheus Camilo at UFC Vegas 106 on Saturday night.
“Two years off is when I’ve really, really grown with Christianity and stuff and done a deep dive into that. Read the bible more and really dove into scripture. That’s where I am right now,” Green told reporters including Cageside Press at his post-fight scrum.
“Going into it I was like you know what if God wants me here I’m going to be here. If God doesn’t want me here I’m not going to be here. I’m not chasing gold, I’m not chasing this, I’m not chasing that. I’m just chasing Jesus.”
Green (12-5) spent two years away after dropping a fight against Battle by KO in May 2023. During that time he worked on his spirituality and his skillset. The rear-naked choke victory over Camilo highlighted a lifetime of work on the mats.
“It’s funny because, before I got to the UFC, I had tons of rear-naked chokes on my record. They would just throw their necks at me sometimes,” he said.
“The last time I lost two fights in-a-row I went on a winning streak that ended with me getting a belt. Let’s see what God meant by that.”
