David Onama will be fighting at home in Kansas City, MO when he takes on Giga Chikadze this Saturday at UFC Kansas City. Which means he’ll have plenty of support when he enters the octagon for his eighth UFC fight.
“Everybody’s coming out. The whole city’s coming out. My family’s here, friends, teammates, just everybody,” Onama (13-2) said during this week’s UFC Kansas City media day. To date, he’s 5-2 in the promotion. “All my fans are here, like I said it’s my home town. Everybody’s going to come out this week, come out and support me.”
Opponent Chikadze was once seen as being on the fast track to a title shot, and while that run has slowed, he remains a top name at 145lbs. A ranked name, for that matter, and one David Onama is very familiar with.
“Coming up, I used to actually watch Giga. I used to watch him growing up, before I got signed to the UFC. I just knew when I get signed to the UFC one day, I manifested that I’m going to end up fighting him one day. And the day came. So I’ll be fighting him this weekend,” Onama revealed. “I’m a big fan of his, been watching him for a very long time, and now I’m fighting him. It’s crazy.”
That having been said, don’t expect Onama to be star-struck come Saturday night.
“Whoever they put in front of me I’ll be ready for it. I know who he is, but I’m going to fight who’s in front of me and not the name. I’m not get all stressed out because it’s Giga. I know who is is, but I’m not going to get stressed out for who he is, and not the name. I’m fighting who’s in front of me, I don’t care about the name or what he did. It’s my time now. I’ll be locked in.”
