Cheyanne Bowers got the call to get ready for the biggest fight of her life. LFA 200 would be in her backyard with three title unification fights on top. One of those would be to unite her interim flyweight belt and Shannon Clark’s title.
While that call was a big one, it came smack in the middle of some other preparations – those for her wedding.
“We had planned and set our date, honestly, like a couple weeks before I got the fight offer,” Bowers explained. “My now husband, he was like, well, what do you want to do? Do you want to keep the date? Do you want to move it?”
After doing so much work for the wedding, it was hard to walk away from it. Ditto with the amount of work she had been putting into training. Ultimately she decided to have her (wedding) cake and eat it to.
“I was like, no, we’ve already put too much work into both sides of this,” she said. “So we’re just going to keep it. So for about 24 hours, turned off fight mode, turned wedding mode. Then as soon as the wedding was over and we had cleaned up Sunday morning, it was right back into fight camp.”
Luckily, Bowers also got quite a bit of help from her family. They all knew how hard it was to get through a wedding without getting off track with a weight cut. With their help she was able to do just that and the wedding became something that helped her get through the hardest parts of the fight camp.
“So my whole family was all about it. They planned meals that I could eat since I was cutting weight and all this type of stuff. So it was, it was a full family affair to get it done,” Bowers explained. “It was kind of nice to just have something to look forward to midway through camp. Then I had like four or five weeks after that to really, really focus in on what was next.”
Now with her attention all the way back on fighting, she’s excited to show all the work she put in. She feels she has the advantages to help top the champ and put her in line for a big show call-up.
“I’m really, really looking forward to kind of showing how I’ve evolved that way. So wherever it goes, I’m feeling pretty comfortable. I feel much more well-rounded than I ever used to be,” she said. “Eventually I’d like to get it to the ground. I got a submission in mind I’m hunting for.”
You can see Bowers chase that submission at LFA 200 this Saturday. The fight card begins at 9pm EST and airs on UFC Fight Pass.
