Somehow, the loss of Beneil Dariush from the UFC Vegas 49 main event made the fight even more compelling.
No, that’s not a knock on Dariush. His bout versus Islam Makhachev would have produced a bonafide number one contender in the lightweight division, primed to face the winner of Charles Oliveira vs. Justin Gaethje later this year. He’s certainly deserving of the opportunity — but Bobby Green stepping in on short notice, fresh off a big win over Nasrat Haqparast, is exactly what MMA is all about: rising to the occasion, and seizing the moment.
Makhachev will no doubt be the heavy favorite, and there will be a big question as to whether Green can stop the Dagestani’s takedowns. But it’s certainly got a fun feel to it — and for a card that was on the brink of collapse, the first main event from Bobby Green absolutely looks promising.
