Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Alex Perez had the MMA world on the edge of their seats as they headlined the UFC 255 main event on Saturday. Throwing down for the UFC Flyweight championship inside the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, it was the first title defense of Figueiredo’s reign.

Alex Perez stepped into UFC 255 a beacon of hope for many winners from Dana White’s Contender Series. The first of the show’s alumni to challenge for a title, he showed that one day they could see their name on the marquee fighting for UFC gold. Perez was stepping into the contender role after Cody Garbrandt’s bicep injury, and was a perfect replacement — not a cash grab, but a true flyweight contender.

Deiveson Figueiredo of course captured his title on the pure destruction of a tough Joseph Benavidez. Twice, in the end, after missing weight the first fight. Against Perez, he proved that was no fluke.

And Still!

Deiveson Figueiredo successfully retained his Flyweight championship thanks to an amazing scramble into a smooth, crisp guillotine. If there were any questions about Deiveson Figueiredo being the real deal, his performance at UFC 255 answered them and then some. The Brazilian is a dangerous package — knockout power and the technique in the submission department will present a challenge for any contender.
