The five things that stand out the most:

  • Well-rounded
  • Good ground and pound
  • Very fast
  • Solid jiu-jitsu
  • Throws a lot of output

Where does Matsumoto excel?

Matsumoto is a well-rounded Brazilian who has looked great at just the age of 20. On the feet, his output/volume is a highlight. Jean is always throwing in volume usually throwing a one-two followed by a leg kick. Not just a one-two though — Matsumoto will fire hook after hook while ripping the body. Putting together punches, leg kicks, and body shots is something he does very well. He stays pretty technical but has that risk factor to throw flying knees, which he likes to end combinations with at times. Utilizing trips in the clinch, getting body lock takedowns, and dropping levels for the double leg is another area in which Matsumoto excels.

With how good he is on the feet, he’s looked even better on the mat. Matsumoto only has three submissions but is a big threat always looking for them. Especially the anaconda choke, which is one of his go-to’s. He throws very good active ground and pound and that mixed in with solid jiu-jitsu makes him a huge threat.

Where does Matsumoto need improvement?

Matsumoto has looked good in his career thus far and in all eight wins, they were pretty clear cut. With that said, he’s had to fight through some adversity in his career. He was dropped once off his back foot. I’ll say he needs to move his head a bit more. The biggest problem is his takedown defense. The times he’s been taken down opponents have been able to rush forward and basically just push Matsumoto over. He makes up for it because he’s good at getting back to his feet and using butterfly hooks. He still needs to be working on moving his hips back, sprawling more instead of accepting the takedown.

Ceiling – High or Low

High. I really like where Matsumoto is at in his career especially at only 20-years-old. He’s already very well-rounded and he’s performing well against decent competition. There are numerous promotions in Brazil he can continue to grow with while testing himself gradually. I’m confident enough to say we will see this kid in the UFC sometime in the future because he has it all.
