Alex Perez dominated and finished Jussier Formiga at UFC 250, earning the rare TKO via leg kicks inside the first round.

The much-maligned UFC flyweight division is in a bit of a shambles right now. After “saving” the weight class, Henry Cejudo jumped to bantamweight, then up and retired. Before he’d even left, Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo battled it out for the vacant 125lb belt.

But Figueiredo missed weight, becoming ineligible to win the title. Then he knocked out Joe. B, leaving the vacant belt still vacant at the end of the night at UFC Norfolk this past February.

Benavidez and Figueiredo will run it back. In the meantime, the promotion buried a key 125lb fight on the early prelim portion of UFC 250. That bout had Jussier Formiga, one of the few contenders in the weight class, taking on Alex Perez.

Alex Perez opened up with a hard calf kick right away, followed by a clean combination. Perez was firing away quickly, throwing right hands followed by the calf kick again. Perez fired off a low kick at Formiga, but Formiga checked it and landed a quick combination. Perez appeared to have a big speed advantage over Formiga, but Formiga was still landing some decent shots of his own. However, the leg kicks began to take a toll, as Formiga’s movement slowed down about halfway through the first round. Perez landed a big combination followed by an uppercut that did damage; he then landed a big kick that dropped Formiga. Formiga would try to battle on but would eat another leg kick that would drop him and finish the fight.

What an amazing performance by Alex Perez. One has to figure he’s next on deck for a title shot at 125 pounds. For those keeping track, that’s two straight UFC events with a leg kick TKO (Chris Gutierrez pulled it off at UFC Vegas).

Official Result: Alex Perez def. Jussier Formiga by TKO (leg kicks), Round 1, 4:26
