Friday’s King of the Jungle card, hosted by ONE Championship on home turf in Singapore, had a couple of big stories coming out of it. For one, the event played to an empty house, as fears regarding the spread of the coronavirus forced the promotion to turn fans away.

That, however, didn’t stop the action. And when the dust settled, two other storylines reigned supreme. First, the feel-good story. Yoshihiro Akiyama, affectionately known to MMA fans as Sexyama, got back in the win column for the first time since 2014, back in his UFC days. After losing his final UFC contest (a close split decision to Alberto Mina), as well as his ONE debut, it seemed like Akiyama’s highlight days might be over.

Instead, at King of the Jungle, he knocked out Sherif Mohamed within a round. Mohamed fell to 9-6 with the loss, while Akiyama moved to 15-7 (with two no contests).

In the main event, meanwhile, Stamp Fairtex suffered a setback, as she was unable to defend her atomweight kickboxing title against rival Janet Todd. Todd earned the split decision win, capturing the title and likely setting up a rematch down the line.
