UFC 235’s Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren, a.k.a. Hip Hop and Flip Flops, Continue to Steal Show in Vegas

It’s an impressive feat, but “Hip Hop and Flip Flops,” sorry, Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren, have consistently stolen the show during the UFC 235 fight week.

Las Vegas, NV — Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley have thus far been stealing the show during the build up to UFC 235. Training partners and friends, their banter seems has been quirky, entertaining, and has shown a new side to T-Wood, a champion often derided as a bit dull.

Perhaps, at the end of all this, Woodley might turn into a bonafide draw. Just continue booking him onto the same cards as Ben Askren.

Case in point, Thursday’s UFC 235 open workouts. At which Askren revealed that Woodley, who has dabbled in the music biz, had penned a little something for him. “He wrote me a rap,” Askren told reporters including Cageside Press. Then proceeded to give a little performance.

The lyrics transcribed below are, frankly, a best effort.

I’m Funky taking on Ruthless
I’mma leave him toothless
T-Wood said let’s hit the booth
I said ‘Yo Homie let’s do this’
This’ the best thing in the UFC
People blowing up my phone line
I ain’t about games, I’m zone time

Askren then added his own, personally crafted ending:

Once I’m done with these welterweights
Even Dana’s got to say I’m great

It’s another step in the career of budding comedy duo Hip Hop & Flip Flops (a nod to Askren’s tendency to wear sandals everywhere).

“I jokingly said you should write me a rap, I got a text back in one minute, like this big,” Askren explained of how this little rap came to be. “I’m not a freestyle maniac,” Woodley interjected. To which Askren replied, “how’d he do it that fast? I can’t even type that fast!”

On a more serious note, what’s the future of a friendship when one man holds the belt, and another wants to be at the top in the same division? Woodley has a plan.

“I’m going to fight this fight, I’m going to beat up on Colby after that. Then I’m going after the middleweight belt,” Woodley outlined. “If I’m successful, and I get the middleweight belt, then we’ll talk about it.”

“Or, here’s what’s going to happen,” Askren chimed in. “We’re going to say, we ain’t playing no more games, we run this sh*t. Dana, here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to make 165 and 175, and you’re going to do it now. He’s going 175, I’m going 165, give us those damn belts.”

UFC President Dana White, of course, has long resisted the idea of a 165lb division, even as fighters have pushed for it. It remains a tantalizing prospect, however.

UFC 235 goes down Saturday, March 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
