Eric Shelton is staying positive, and ready for anything in the face of flyweight’s demise. Well, as positive as possible given MMA judging.
Denver, CO — Eric Shelton picked up a split decision win on the UFC Denver Fight Pass prelims on Saturday night — a decision with opposing 30-27 scores. Luckily, he was on the right end of the decision. But competing in a weight class that may not be around too much longer, the future is about as certain as the judging for the ATT flyweight.
Speaking to Cageside Press and other outlets following the fight, Shelton addressed the weight class situation, and scorecards, among other topics.
“A hundred percent I could compete at 35. I can compete with anyone in the world at 35 and below,” he said in regards to what would happen if flyweight was given the boot from the UFC roster. “I’m excited. I can bulk up and go up. It’s nothing to me. I’m down for whatever.”
Asked about his reaction to flyweights like Jared Brooks and Shorty Torres end up cut, Shelton answered that “I’m here for a reason. They could easily cut me. But because of God, I’m here, and I was able to get another fight and win, so I’m coming off a win. I think that holds me well, where I’m at.”
Moving forward, whatever happens, “I’m going to just stay focused on this win, and whatever comes my way, I’m ready for. I’m definitely going to stay focused on my grind.”
As for the 30-27 score that went against him in his fight against Joseph Morales, Shelton admitted that he was “mind blown. I didn’t know what they were watching. That’s why you don’t leave it to the judges. You can get robbed. I’ve been robbed in a few of my fights. I could easily be 4-1 right now.”
“But you leave it to the judges, and that’s the risk you take,” he finished.
