Light heavyweights Oumar Sy and Modestas Bukaukas threw down as part of Saturday’s UFC Paris preliminary card at the Accor Arena.
Bukaukas, on a successful second stint with the UFC, was coming off a split decision victory over Bellator vet Christian Edwards; France’s Sy was hoping to bounce back from a loss against Ion Cutelaba this past March.
Round 1: Sy took control of the center of the cage early, looking to find his jab. Bukauskas seemed content to circle the cage and counter when Sy looked to clinch up. Sy was able to clinch up a couple of times, but Bukauskas defended any grappling advancements. After separating at range, Sy shot a well-timed double-leg and took the fight to the floor. As Bukauskas looked to scramble up on the cage, Sy maintained control and momentarily took the back before working to mount. From there, he landed hard ground and pound to control Bukauskas and secure the round.
Round 2: The second round opened as a continuation of the end of the first. Sy took Bukauskas down seconds into the round, moving to side control before a Bukauskas heel hook allowed a getup. Sy made him pay with an uppercut on the way up, and landed another takedown soon after. After using the cage again to work to his feet, a scramble allowed Bukauskas to get on top. After landing in side control and working to the back, a d’Arce choke attempt gave Sy the chance to break back to his feet. After standing up, a failed takedown led to a very bad visual sequence for Sy. Bukauskas responded with a knee in the clinch, dropping Sy and giving Bukauskas a big comeback KO.
