UFC Abu Dhabi is down a fight on short notice, after welterweight Islam Dulatov was reportedly hospitalized.
News of the development broke just hours prior to the event, with UFC officials offering a brief statement.
“Due to illness, Islam Dulatov is out of his welterweight bout against Wellington Turman. As a result, this bout has been cancelled from tonight’s main card,” the promotion wrote on their official website.
Dulatov’s team offered more details in a statement released to his official social media channels, primarily his Instagram Story.
“Last night, Islam was admitted to hospital due to an infection and spent several hours receiving medial treatment,” the statement reads in part. “Despite every effort to keep the fight on, the decision was made together with the UFC to withdraw him from the bout in the interest of his health and well-being.”
“Right now, the only priority is for Islam to make a full recovery. He will personally address everyone with a statement as soon as he is able.”
“We are truly sorry- especially for all the fans who were looking forward to this fight and have supported Islam every step of the way,” Dulatov’s team added.
“But one thing is certain: Islam will use this time to recover completely and will come back stronger than ever.”
Islam Dulatov (12-1) made a big splash when he debuted in the UFC last July, with the model-turned-fighter earning a Performance of the Night bonus after knocking out Adam Fugitt at UFC 318. The 27-year old has not fought since.
