Louie Sutherland left no doubt in Perth.
Blending relentless wrestling and ground control, Sutherland negated the power of Tai Tuivasa across three rounds, repeatedly dragging the heavyweight to the mat and dictating the pace en route to a dominant decision victory at UFC Perth on Saturday night.
Round 1 – Both fighters came out firing, hands high and loaded as the feeling-out process barely lasted a moment. Sutherland opened with a leg kick the usual tactic against Tuivasa, before quickly shooting for a takedown.
Tuivasa briefly threatened with a guillotine, forcing Sutherland to disengage.
Undeterred, Sutherland shot again and managed to bring Tuivasa down, but the guillotine threat once more allowed Tuivasa to work his way back to his feet. Sutherland kept him pinned along the fence until Tuivasa created space with two heavy shots upstairs.
That moment sparked Tuivasa, who surged forward with a flurry. Sutherland responded by shooting for another takedown, but it was initially stuffed. The two exchanged in close before Sutherland attempted yet another entry, stuffed again, but he transitioned quickly, rolling through and dragging Tuivasa to the mat to secure top position.
From there, Sutherland controlled the action, landing elbows from above while shutting down any attempts from Tuivasa to escape.
Round 2 – Sutherland went right back to the leg kicks before shooting in for another takedown. This time, he paid a price, eating a couple of sharp knees from Tuivasa on the way in, but still managed to complete the takedown.
Tuivasa worked back to his feet quickly, only to be dragged right back down. Sutherland settled into side control, landing elbows up top and mixing in shots to the body.
As the crowd began chanting, “Stand them up!”, Sutherland stayed active enough to keep the referee from intervening. He advanced to full mount and continued to land clean, effective strikes.
Sutherland then looked for a head-and-arm choke, but Tuivasa was able to shrimp out and avoid the submission. Tuivasa started to build a base, got back to his feet, and landed a couple of shots, but was quickly taken down again.
From there, Sutherland remained in control, sticking tight and continuing to land heavy ground-and-pound while preventing any meaningful escape attempts.
Round 3 – Clearly down on the cards, Tuivasa came out aggressively, looking to pressure Sutherland and force the action.
Sutherland stayed composed, circling on the outside, but a moment of overcommitment from Tuivasa allowed Sutherland to secure another takedown with just over four minutes remaining. Tuivasa immediately looked to scramble, grabbing hold of a guillotine in an attempt to either threaten a finish or work his way back to his feet. Sutherland defended well and returned to landing steady ground strikes.
Sutherland maintained enough activity to keep the referee from intervening, despite repeated calls throughout the round to improve the action.
Eventually, the referee stood them back up. Tuivasa seized the moment, scoring a late takedown and taking top position. He unleashed a series of heavy shots in search of a knockout, but time expired before he could turn the tide.
Easy night for Louie Sutherland in Perth.
