Winnipeg, MB — Flyweight Jasmine Jasudavicius admits that her showing at UFC Winnipeg on Saturday was “not exactly the performance I would have liked,” but she’s still “happy to be back” in the win column.
Speaking with Cageside Press and other media outlets in Winnipeg, Jasudavicius (15-4) admitted that the goal in her fight with Karine Silva was to win before anything else.
“Number one top priority, get back in the win column. Number two was getting the finish and all that kind of stuff.”
Jasudavicius went as far to admit playing it a little bit safe in the fight. “The win is more important than a crazy performance.”
The Canadian, fighting out of Niagara Top Team, had seen a five-fight win streak snapped in her last outing, when she ran into ex-title challenger Manon Fiorot. She’s now 6-1 in her last seven following a unanimous decision victory over Silva.
During media day, Jasudavicius suggested that “life is martial arts, and martial arts is life,” saying that performances in the cage reflected life outside it. She told Cageside Press on Saturday that from her last fight to this one, what is being reflected is “that I have a lot more patience in life. I feel kind of like the old me would have been stuck in those precarious situations, when she was locking stuff down.”
The precarious situations included a couple of submission attempts by Silva.
“I’m proud of the work that I put in in this camp. I’ve been in that position multiple times, I’ve been able to get out of that position a little bit better. I wasn’t in a panic. I knew that she wasn’t able to finish anything. So I was just kind of biding my time when she opens up, for me to continue to progress.”
Moving forward, you may not see Jasudavicius return as quickly as she has previously. Known for her busy schedule, the #7-ranked flyweight took a good amount of time away to hone her skills in the gym after the Fiotrot loss. That’s likely to continue.
“I did win this fight but I’m not as proud as I would have liked to have been. So we’re going to be back to the drawing board right away and make sure that I’m polishing off my game.” The other girls in the division are only getting more skilled, Jasudavicius added. “I have to be able to make sure that I’m keeping up with that and continue to progress and be the more dominant fighter. And show to the UFC, show to the world that I deserve to be fighting for that number one spot.”
