Charles Jourdain: “I Truly Became A Professional After My 15th UFC Fight”

Winnipeg, MB — Despite earning a unanimous decision win over Kyler Phillips and a Fight of the Night bonus, Canada’s Charles Jourdain wasn’t entirely satisfied with his performance at UFC Winnipeg.

Speaking with Cageside Press and other media outlets following Saturday’s Fight Night event, Jourdain (18-8-1) admitted that he was “mad at myself, because I didn’t underestimate Kyler Phillips, but I overestimated my grappling ability. And I was very mad at myself after the fight, because I was defending any type of single leg properly, but those body locks were something I knew he was good at, but I didn’t prepare myself for it. So this is why I was mad at myself after the victory.”

Still, that’s three straight wins, and three-straight post-fight bonuses for Jourdain, and he was willing to call it a “good victory.” As for the bonus money, that’s now $100,000 U.S., doubled from previous years.

“Oof! That sounds good, but I have my wife there, [she] already spent it all on renovations for the house,” Jourdain admitted with a glance offstage to where wife Clarence was waiting.

Earlier this week, Jourdain talked about doing away with “weak Charles” after a knockout loss to Jean Silva nearly two years ago. The Charles who was ordering pizza ahead of Fight Week, and spending more time playing video games than thinking about fighting.

“It’s very difficult to sum up what happened when I lost by KO against Jean Silva,” explained Jourdain. “I changed as a man. I was about to quit everything, and then Clarence, my wife, comes in and she’s like ‘we’re having a baby.'” That’s when Jourdain questioned whether he wanted to be the “dad quitter” who put it all behind him and didn’t give everything.

Jourdain did quit one thing, besides sloppy eating habits, and that’s edibles. No more gummies, which he said led to a definite improvement in the cage. Prior to that, he’d been “riding the wave of talent, but talent cannot get you that far in life. You need to mix it with professionalism.”

“I truly became a professional after my 15th fight in the UFC, so that’s kind of weird to say, but now I’m a professional and I’ll keep acting that way. Three in a row!”
