Four years on from a 2021 booking at UFC 269, women’s flyweights Erin Blanchfield and Maycee Barber were finally set to face off, now as the main event of Saturday’s UFC Vegas 107.
Both women had come into the UFC as highly touted prospects, and both had hit their stride in recent years. For Barber, there was a six-fight win streak, with victories over two former title challengers in the flyweight division. For Blanchfield, there were wins over former champions in Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas; a lone loss, to Manon Fiorot, didn’t hurt all that much given Fiorot was the most recent woman to challenge Valentina Shevchenko for gold.
With Weili Zhang a factor and Natalia Silva on the rise, a title shot was far from assured for the winner of Blanchfield vs. Barber – but they’d certainly be within striking distance.
