UFC lightweight Chris Duncan has come very long way since his early days of MMA in Bellator, but it’s the memory of his mother that keeps him fighting hard.
“I lost my mom very tragically. I don’t get to share things like the birth of my children and my wins,” Duncan told Cageside Press at his post-fight scrum.
“That’s why I started this journey.”
Duncan (13-2) lost his mother at a very young age shaping what would be a hardened mindset taking him all the way to the UFC. Still, it’s a very painful realization for Duncan knowing his mother will miss some of the most important moments of his life.
“I used to be a shepherd and I stopped being a shepherd because my mom was ripped away from me at a very, very young age. I get jealous of people…I see other moms celebrating time with their daughter or their son, and I don’t get that,” he said.
“I don’t get to share this with my mom, and like I said, I started this journey with my mom.”
From the very beginning of his MMA career Duncan had to push through the tragic loss of his mother. Duncan showed a toughness to get through hard times from the very first fight on.
“People don’t know this, but I had my first amateur fight when my mom died. That was the day of the weigh-ins and I still went ahead and fought the next day. I’m built for this. Nothing’s going to stop me. People like pull out for silly reasons. My mom died the day of the weigh-ins of my first ever MMA fight. I’m as tough as they come.”
