UFC 312: Wang Cong Says She’s New to MMA, But Learning Fast

Sydney, Australia — Women’s flyweight Wang Cong was part of a big night for the Chinese contingent in Sydney, Australia at UFC 312.

Team China went 3 for 3, with Zhu Rong, Cong, and women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang all picking up decision wins on the night. For Cong, fighting on the prelims, it was a unanimous decision over Bruna Brasil that improved Wang’s record to 7-1.

Reflecting on the fight backstage at the Qudos Bank Arena, Cong, speaking via translator, told media outlets including Cageside Press that “I let her do more work, because I wanted to feel her pace. Then in second and third, I go in for the fight.” She would go on to add that “the first round, I was like trying to let her attack first, and see what’s her combo, what’s she got. In the second and third round, I have a game plan in my mind.”

After posting a 2-1 record in her last three fights and never once seeing the judges, Cong went to the scorecards for the first time in the UFC on Saturday. Asked about whether it was Brasil’s game plan, or her own approach, that saw the fight go the distance, Cong explained that “the loss I took the last time gave me a lot of experience. I’m new to MMA, but I think I’m learning very fast. So I will keep getting more mature in the sport.”

Cong carries the nickname “The Joker,” and wears the D.C. villain’s face paint to match. At weigh-ins on Friday, Brasil showed up in a Batman mask, which Wang Cong appreciated.

“I like Batman mask a lot. Let’s copy what happened in the movie – the Joker won eventually,” said Cong. “Her mask made me excited.”
