Interim light heavyweight gold was up for grabs when LFA 178 went down live at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, California on Friday, March 8, 2024.

That interim belt was being eyed by both Uran Satybaldiev and Bruno Assis, with Satybaldiev of Kyrgyzstan entering the bout after a unanimous decision win in his LFA promotional debut. As for Assis, the former Dana White’s Contender Series hopeful was looking for a way back to a UFC opportunity, and had over twice the experience of his opponent.

Also on the card, another light heavyweight standout in Ozzy Diaz, who fell to Joe Pyfer on the Contender Series, but had his own win over Assis. Diaz was competing in MMA for the first time since that 2022 loss to Pyfer.
