A former UFC fighter who has also appeared for Bellator MMA and Cage Warriors among other promotions is behind bars in a Utah jail. That’s following multiple instances of assault, allegedly perpetrated against his girlfriend, with the fighter initially ducking charges by leaving the state.

Cain Carrizosa, also known as Cain Castillo, 36, was arrested on January 2, 2023 by police in St. George, Utah, on robbery and aggravated assault charges.

Those charges stem from a pair of incidents, the most recent occurring during the early hours of New Year’s Day 2023.

According to multiple local news reports, Carrizosa, who competed twice for the UFC from 2014-15, was named as a suspect after officers arrived on scene to a residence on a domestic violence call, to discover a female victim suffering from a black eye. Per a detailed account in St. George News, the woman’s injuries were consistent with having been punched; when they attempted to interview her, she went into convulsions, suffering an apparent seizure.

The victim was transported St. George Regional Hospital, as she continued to suffer additional seizures.

The assault was not the first suffered by the victim allegedly at the hands of Carrizosa. According to family members, the woman, who had no prior history of seizures, had also been attacked by the fighter in March of 2022.

In that instance, officers investigating a “family fight” learned, per witnesses, that the woman had been punched in the back of the head, allegedly by Carrizosa, who was identified as her boyfriend. However, as Carrizosa is a name the suspect fought under, rather than his given name of Castillo, he was able to leave the state without being apprehended, traveling to Las Vegas.

The March assault saw the victim knocked the the ground, then dragged by Carrizosa, who later fled with her cell phone, resulting in the robbery charge laid earlier this month. The woman had “no means of contacting help once she came to,” per police, who added “It was reasonable to conclude the seizures were triggered by the assault.”

It was not until the New Year’s Day incident that police were able to properly identify Cain Carrizosa as Cain Castillo and subsequently arrest him.

The fighter is being held without bail after announcing his intention to once again leave the state, but indicated he will retain counsel, and may be afforded a bail hearing in future. He is facing charges of one count each of second-degree felony aggravated assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony. A second degree robbery charge also applies to the March incident.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

As a fighter, Cain Carrizosa began his pro career in 2011, starting out by running up a 6-0 record, including a stop in Bellator MMA. He then landed in the UFC in 2014, where he would lose to Chris Wade then Leonardo Mafra the following year before being bounced back to the regional circuit.

With an 11-5 record as a pro, Carrizosa most recently competed in January of 2022, losing to Josh Wick at Fierce FC 18. One fight prior, he suffered another defeat at the hands of current UFC athlete Jai Herbert, under the Cage Warriors banner.
