UFC 280: Mateusz Gamrot Respects Dariush, Says He Finishes Him If Fight Hits The Ground

UFC lightweight Mateusz Gamrot comes into UFC 280 riding a 4-fight win streak which he will attempt to continue when he takes on Beneil Dariush on the main card portion of the PPV this Saturday night.

Gamrot (21-1) asked for a high-ranking fight following his main event bout against Armen Tsarukyan in June. He got Dariush.

“I’m sure excite that I can fight with Beneil Dariush. He’s one of the best guys in the division. He’s #6 in the ranking. For sure if I beat him on Saturday night I enter into the top 5,” Gamrot told the press at media day on Wednesday.

Gamrot spoke highly of his opponent even when some fans seem not to.

“We have both big respect. I for him and he has for me. I understand this situation because he has 7-fight win streak,” Gamrot said.

“Beneil is good everywhere. Big, strong, put pressure in striking, heavy kicks. But you know I am right there in jiu jitsu. For sure we meet in the ground and I am sure that I will finish him in the ground.”

The main event of UFC 280 will put the two best lightweights in the world with Charles Oliveria and Islam Makhachev fighting for the title. The same division that Gamrot hopes to rule one day as champion, but who does he think will win the belt?

“I think if Islam doesn’t make stupid mistake in the fight I think he win,” he said.

If Gamrot defeats Dariush impressively it’s not out of the question that the UFC could possibly give him a title shot next.

“First I have to win (on) Saturday night and I’m going to be next in the line to title shot. But like I say I think Islam winning Saturday night and I hope so we meet together in the next (fight).”
