It has been some time since we last saw Gunnar Nelson go to battle inside the UFC Octagon.

To be precise, the last time we witnessed “Gunni” throw hands was September 28, 2019 where he lost to Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision. Since then, Nelson’s absence has not gone unnoticed, with many starting to wonder where Gunnar was given he’d been MIA for well over two years.

On Monday, however, fans of the Icelandic welterweight got some good news. Nelson took to Twitter, where he announced that he had signed a multi-fight contract with the UFC. Despite his announcement of the new deal, no date of return and no potential next opponent has been named. He did, however, add that “hopefully a fight announcement [is] coming soon.”

When Nelson does step back inside the octagon, he’ll be looking to put a two fight losing streak within the UFC behind him. Prior to those setbacks, Nelson, who trains out of SBG Ireland alongside the likes of Conor McGregor, Makwan Amirkhani, and others, had picked up a win over Brazilian “Cowboy” Alex Oliveira.

Nelson first joined the UFC a decade ago, making his debut at UFC on Fuel TV 5 in Nottingham, England. A return to the U.K. by the UFC has been rumored for March, which could potentially be a landing spot for Nelson.
