Bellator 270: Patchy Mix Opens Up on Weight Miss, Loud Dublin Crowd

A hostile atmosphere welcomed Patchy Mix to the 3Arena in Dublin on Friday. That didn’t stop him from submitting local hero James Gallagher in the co-main event of Bellator 270 however.

The crowd was “maybe the loudest crowd” Mix has ever fought in front of, he told members of the press following the fight. And that’s despite competing at Madison Square Garden in New York City. “This one was different. The MSG crowd, they don’t get behind their guys like this. I don’t know what it was, it was like a movie, I’m telling you. It sounded incredible. I always want to fight in front of that.”

The knock on Mix coming into Friday’s bantamweight showdown is that he’d missed weight for the fight. Thursday, he stepped on the scale at 137lbs — a pound over the non-title limit. It was a rather shocking turn of events, given Mix previously fought for the title.

“I had three days to cut a lot of weight. I just didn’t hit my mark,” Mix explained. “Normally I’m able to hit that mark, but my body stopped sweating when I was in the sauna.”

“It wasn’t like I missed by like five pounds,” he continued. “I’ve never missed weight my whole entire career, 27 fights amateur and pro. And I was at 137lbs. To get fined for the amount of money I did, for a pound, believe me, I tried everything I could to make that.”
