Colby Covington’s Kurt Angle entrance, UFC on ESPN 5

Look, it’s no mystery that all, or at least most of Colby Covington’s current shtick is taken from the world of professional wrestling.

He basically plays an over-the-top pro-wrestling “heel” or bad guy that has childish insults for his opponents, and even elements of his extreme patriotism gimmick are similar to Hulk Hogan in the 80s. With that all known, Covington’s walkout at UFC on ESPN 5 wasn’t entirely surprising, but man it worked well.

Walking out to WWE Hall of Famers Kurt Angle’s theme, and as Angle did in his prime, earning chants of “You Suck” from the crowd, Covington got exactly the response he wanted. Covington always wanted to be a star and be the bad guy, similar to mentor Chael Sonnen was before him. It all came to a head that night in Newark.

As for the fight, Covington would follow up the entrance with a historic performance, landing a record 600 strikes on former champion Robbie Lawler en route to a dominating decision victory.
