The UFC returned to the Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday, following three entertaining fight cards back on Fight Island. Alistair Overeem and Alexander Volkov took center stage in the main event at UFC Vegas 18 and the pros took notice.

For Alistair Overeem, the hunt was on for that elusive UFC championship. Ultimate Fighting Championship gold remains the final belt “The Demolition Man” hopes to one day place on the mantle next to his K-1, Dream and Strikeforce titles. In yet another main event in his lengthy career, this time against Alexander Volkov, that added incentive could be key. Really, it has been the driving force behind his resurgence in the heavyweight division, with his last two wins coming by way of TKO. With Overeem publicly stating this as his last run at championship gold, it was added motivation Saturday night.

Alexander Volkov believes he is on the right track at getting a shot at UFC gold and that it is his time to become a UFC champion. Of course, he needed to get past  Alistair Overeem and use his legendary career to build his own resume.

That’s just what the Russian known as “Drago” did. Alexander Volkov picked Overeem apart, adding up damage from the jab and the right hand combined with his hooks, bloodying up Overeem to get the finish early in the second round.
