While veterans like Glover Teixeira and Andrei Arlovski were reminding the world that they can still compete inside the Octagon, a UFC Hall of Famer was recovering from a different kind of fight this weekend. That’s after news broke Sunday that Mark Coleman had suffered a heart attack.

The 55-year old Godfather of Ground-and-Pound is reportedly “recovering well” per his daughter Morgan’s Instagram. But the legend is not in the clear just yet as there is still a need for more tests. The incident took place earlier this month, with Coleman remaining in hospital.

Coleman took to his personal Twitter and gave some more insight on the situation and indicated that it was his daughter who urged him to go to the hospital. It just goes to show that just when we think we know our own bodies, it is often the love and support of our families that motivate us to reach out for medical support. Thankfully, Coleman did.

Coleman helped pioneer the sport of mixed martial arts as we know it today. The inaugural UFC heavyweight champion and a PRIDE grand prix winner, Coleman was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2008 in the pioneer wing.

All of us at Cageside Press wish Mark “The Hammer” Coleman a speedy recovery.
