UFC flyweights Joanne Calderwood and Jessica Eye will be competing at UFC 257 on January 23 at a location to be determined.
A UFC flyweight bout has been added to the highly anticipated UFC 257 card that Conor McGregor’s return has been linked to. MMAJunkie reports that a fight between Joanne Calderwood and Jessica Eye has been made official with both women looking to make moves in the ever-growing flyweight division.
After a heartbreaking loss to Jennifer Maia in August that cost her a title shot, Joanne Calderwood will be looking to get back into the growing flyweight title picture. After having spent part of her UFC career at strawweight, Calderwood found her home at flyweight where she has a 4-2 record. Prior to the fight with Maia, Calderwood had recorded victories over Kalindra Faria, Ariane Lipski, and Andrea Lee.
Jessica Eye also finds herself in a precarious spot after having missed weight in two of her last three bouts. After having been on a three-fight win streak to earn a title shot, Eye suffered losses to Valentina Shevchenko (for the title) and Cynthia Calvillo that sandwiched a victory over Viviane Araujo last December. Her last bout was also marred in controversy as Calvillo claims that Eye’s team told her prior to the weigh-in that Eye would be missing weight by far more. Eye made contact with the towel during the weigh in a move that Calvillo claimed was to cheat the scale so that her weight miss would not be as drastic as it actually was.
Currently, no main event has been announced for UFC 257 although it has officially been offered to Conor McGregor for a fight with Dustin Poirier. The event is expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas although that has yet to be completely determined.
