After claiming the BMF title with a solid performance that was capped by an underwhelming ending, Jorge Masivdal feels he fell just short of a masterpiece.
New York, NY — Jorge Masvidal wanted to paint a masterpiece at UFC 244.
“As far as painting my Picasso, I almost got to do it,” Masvidal said following the event, which saw him win the “BMF” belt with a doctor’s stoppage TKO against Nate Diaz. “I heard a lot of comments, I read a lot of media stuff, people talking about the later the fight goes, or if the fight hits the ground, in certain situations, I’d be outworked and outclassed. Not happening. I want someone who can put up a fight, that I faded in the fourth or fifth round, that’s not going to happen. What happened in the third was just going to keep happening in the fourth and the fifth.”
Masvidal made his comments while working on a slice of pizza, noting that he hadn’t eaten. About as laid back as they come following a big fight. Even though it wasn’t quite the storybook ending.
“I was ready to f*ck him up. Nate’s a f*cking dog,” he told reporters including Cageside Press. “Those same shots, I’ve hit a lot of people, I’ve folded them like a lawn chair. You’ve literally got to kill that dude.”
He didn’t, though. And the doctor’s stoppage, due a nasty gash over Diaz’s eye, left both Masvidal and his opponent wanting to run it back.
“I’m the most competitive person this whole f*cking company’s ever seen. I don’t want nothing to take my greatness,” Masvidal insisted. No excuses, in other words. No asterisks. “That’s not me. I want to end him. I want to send him off to another dimension. I’ve got nothing but respect for the dude but that’s the type of artwork I like to do. I didn’t get him in this one. Are we going to rematch tomorrow or next week? I don’t know, but it will happen at some point.”
So what does Jorge Masvidal want?
“I’m open to the money, and he’s a money fight. If Canelo [Alvarez] wants to get his ass kicked, that’s a fight I’ll take. I’m just here to get the biggest checks possible, but Nate is in the future for a fact. Whether we’re doing it next year or the year after that. But it’s going to happen.”
The Canelo Alvarez idea came a little out of left field. Explaining the idea behind it, “I can box. I can hit hard. I’ve got different angles. I’m not going to get tired in a 12-round boxing event, especially if I have time to prepare for it,” Masvidal answered. “It’s just kind of fate. He’s fighting today, I’m fighting today. I heard we f*cking killed him on the pay-per-views. UFC what up, you’re welcome.”
“I don’t know, I’d like to break his face,” he continued. “Just fight, just test myself, make a lot of money for testing myself. But I truly feel I could make it 1-1 MMA versus boxing.”
