Bellator 229’s co-headliner will see lightweights Saad Awad and Goiti Yamauchi collide.

Bellator’s return to Temecula, California with Andrey Koreshkov vs. Lorenz Larkin in the main event now has its co-feature set. ESPN was first to report that lightweights Saad Awad and Goiti Yamauchi would serve as the co-main event for Bellator 229. The news includes word that Awad has signed a new deal with the promotion, which he has called home consistently since 2013, at Bellator 87.

Awad (23-11) actually debuted in Bellator was back at Bellator 10 in 2009, a one-off fight as he continued to work his way through the regional scene in California. Overall, Awad, a native of San Bernadino, has gone 11-8 in Bellator. He recently dropped back-to-back fights against Benson Henderson and Brandon Girtz.

Yamauchi (23-4), a Brazilian born in Japan, has been another Bellator regular in recent years. He’s also called Bellator home since 2013, going 9-3 in the organization. Yamauchi is 4-1 in his past five bouts, with the lone loss coming to multi-time lightweight champ Michael Chandler in a non-title affair. In his most recent effort, he earned a split decision win over Bellator Season 10 featherweight tournament winner Daniel Weichel.

Bellator 229 takes place at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California, on October 4, 2019.
