No one expected the outcome of Jorge Masvidal vs. Ben Askren at UFC 239 — at least, not how quickly it all fell apart for Askren.

It took mere seconds. When the bell rang in the welterweight clash between Jorge Masvidal and Ben Askren at UFC 239, Masvidal charged. Askren dipped, looking for the takedown. Masvidal leaped into the flying knee, connected, and Askren went out.

Stiff as a board. Just like that, Jorge Masvidal had the fastest knockout in UFC history. The two punches landed after the bell were pure instinct. ‘Funky’ Ben was fast asleep.

MMA fans everywhere were stunned. You might have picked Askren by smothering grappling, or Masvidal by knockout, eventually. But a flying knee, in five seconds? And believe it or not, it might have been less. Really, half the time was the ref running in to make the save, preventing Askren from taking further damage.

Even after the win, Masvidal had nothing nice to say about his opponent, so instead he told Joe Rogan he’d say nothing at all. Eventually, however, he did say a little.

“That dude was talking wild man. I had to show him there’s consequences sometimes,” Masvidal said after the fight. “You guys are welcome for ending that dude,” he added.
