MMA is one of, if not the, most exciting sports on the planet. It’s also one of the most dangerous. If you’re reading this, you’re about to find out why. Assuming you didn’t already know.

In any sort of subjective list like this, there are going to be omissions, so feel free to chime in with some of your top picks for unfortunate mishaps in the cage.

This is also not an attempt to glorify injury — the road back from these sort of mishaps is long and arduous to say the least. But it’s all part of the sport in the end, so with no further ado, here’s the ten most gruesome injuries in MMA history.

10. Mark Hominick vs. Jose Aldo

Mark Hominick Credit: Sherdog.com

Remember that time a small alien being attempted to hatch itself out of Mark Hominick’s head?

<del>Pepperidge Farms</del> we remember.

Canada’s Hominick had been a contender in the featherweight division since the WEC days. When World Xtreme Cagefighting was absorbed into the UFC, a single win was all it took for Hominick to earn a title shot against Jose Aldo. That win came via TKO over George Roop, and left Hominick sitting on a five-fight win streak that included names like Leonard Garcia and Bryan Caraway.

The showdown with Aldo came in Toronto at UFC 129 in April 2011, at the Rogers Centre, better known as the SkyDome. For five rounds, Hominick went toe-to-toe with one of the all-time greats; not only that, he came close to stealing the victory in the final frame.

Outside of that late surge, however, the lasting image of the fight was of the growth on Hominick’s head.

Cris Cyborg was on the verge of clearing out Bellator’s featherweight division barely a year after arriving in the promotion.

On Friday night at Bellator 259, Cyborg was set to make her second title defense. Wins over Julia Budd and Arlene Blencowe had started her run in the promotion; next up, a rematch with fellow UFC ex-pat Leslie Smith.

A win over Smith would leave only Cat Zingano and perhaps Leah McCourt as credible contenders at 145lbs. But Cyborg has never been one to look past an opponent, and “The Peacemaker” was clearly in her sights Friday.

Unlike many of Cris Cyborg’s fights, the Bellator 259 main event made it to round five Friday night. Which was impressive in itself, and perhaps a small badge of honor for the game Leslie Smith.

The pair faced off at center to open the bout, Cyborg steadily marching forward, throwing hard and forcing Smith to clinch. The second exchange saw a volley of lefts and rights from the champ; Smith covered up and survived the attack. Cyborg mixed in a body kick at range, and went to the body with a right hand. That body kick would show itself again moments later. Smith, meanwhile was surviving, but unable to make a dent in terms of offense of her own. Her attacks were turning into looping hail Mary punches, and before long, Cyborg had Smith down off a 1-2 that connected.

From there, the champ went to work on the ground. As ferocious in the ground n’ pound department as she was on the feet, Cyborg landed some heavy blows, but Smith would survive the round.

The second saw Cris Cyborg on the attack again, targeting the body. Once again, Smith struggled to get her own offence going, too often firing back blindly after Cyborg’s attacks. Cyborg’s left hand was sneaking around Smith’s guard, hitting the side of the head more than once. The round belonged to Cyborg, but Smith had already made it far beyond the point she had in the pair’s fist meeting back in 2016.

Round three had Smith pressing forward early, but Cyborg caught a kick, landed the takedown, and nearly took the back. A scramble by Smith kept her out of harm’s way, however. A short time later, Smith herself would try to find a takedown off a kick, but Cyborg’s balance proved up to the job. Smith did land a stiff jab; Cyborg landed a low kick on the challenger. The third frame was no doubt the best yet for Leslie Smith, but it still ended with Cyborg knocking her off balance and controlling from the back.

Heading into round four, Smith was going to need to turn up the heat. If the plan was to drag Cyborg into deep waters, she seemed to be swimming well enough, still bringing the fight to the challenger. Once again, Cyborg would land a punch that sent Smith off-balance and to the ground briefly. If not a clean knockdown, it was another sign of who was in control. Cyborg finished the round with a combo followed by a takedown, well up on the scorecards heading into the fifth.

Smith unquestionably needed a finish to win gold Friday. And she fought like it early in round five, pushing the pace and bringing the fight to the champ. But Cyborg was fresh, and still deadly. Her kicks, her hands were still a threat. It became apparent that Smith simply wasn’t going to be able to put the champ away — and instead, it was Cyborg with a late knockdown, which led to her swarming Smith, getting the stoppage in the final ten seconds of the round!

Smith will get high marks for heart and durability, but once again, it was Cris Cyborg with her hand raised at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT on Friday night. Next up, Cat Zingano, a fight Cyborg called for after the victory.

Official Result: Cris Cyborg def. Leslie Smith by TKO, Round 5, 4:51

In a callback to their UFC days, Cyborg was paired up with Leslie Smith. Smith entered the fight off a win over Amanda Bell, and 2-1 overall in the promotion. Cyborg, meanwhile, had won three straight, and defended her title once — a submission win over Arlene Blencowe back in October.

Also on the card Friday, former bantamweight champ Darrion Caldwell returned to 135lbs to take on Leandro Higo, while top-ranked middleweights Austin Vanderford and Fabian Edwards threw down in a fight with clear title implications.

Bellator 259 takes place live on Friday, May 21 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The event airs on Showtime in the U.S. A live stream of the prelim action can be found above, Canadian viewers can watch the main card below.

Somehow, Cris “Cyborg” Justino is seemingly on the verge of sweeping another division after more than a decade in the fight game. After winning and defending gold in several major promotions in MMA history, Justino is looking to clear the field that she has available in her latest home. At a time when the UFC has given their featherweight division the kiss of death, Justino has a healthy schedule to keep her occupied. A victory on Friday would be her second defense of the Bellator title, and only Cat Zingano would remain as a fresh opponent. Beyond that, up-and-comers such as undercard fighters Leah McCourt and Janay Harding would seemingly be all that’s left for Justino in Bellator.

Cyborg could accomplish her mission by year’s end if she stays busy. At 35 years old, that would seem to be the point. The fact is, a rematch with Amanda Nunes to avenge her biggest (and in the eyes of many the only) career loss is unlikely to ever happen. With that in mind, Justino is looking to get as many title defenses and names on her resume as possible as her prime years slowly wind down. It should be noted, she is still one of the best fighters in all of MMA whose engine has yet to stop running at full speed. There are still big fights left for her if the stars align, and she is likely hoping to book them while she is still the favorite.

On the other side of the living legend is a familiar foe, and one for whom Friday marks a potential last chance to claim glory. If the story of Cyborg’s career is dominance, then Leslie Smith’s career is one of persistence. A decade long pro, Smith has seen plenty in going from flyweight to featherweight and competing for Invicta, the UFC, and now Bellator. Her wins and losses may not leap off the page, but Smith’s legacy will go beyond such numbers towards causes outside the cage. She is best known for being one of the biggest advocates for fighter unionization at a time when fighter pay continues to be a hot topic.

Friday’s contest would be more than a victory over one of the sport’s best. Smith came up short against Cyborg once before, in 2016 when the Brazilian depleted herself to compete at a catchweight of 140 pounds. With Smith now at 38 years old, to best Justino at this stage of her career and get redemption would be one of the biggest upsets of the year. After more than a decade in the fight game already, it wouldn’t be out of the question for Smith to possibly even walk away on top as champion.

Justino should look to be patient and find her moments to put forward pressure on Smith. Smith is known for trying to smother opponents with her physicality and is competent on the mat and on the feet so a patient approach will be the best course for Justino. “Cyborg” is the more technical striker and is expected to be the explosive striker of the two so a disciplined approach should lead to her being able to capitalize on openings left by Smith when the challenger looks to close the distance.

An upset for Smith would likely lead to an immediate rematch for Justino for what would be the first rubber match of the Brazilian’s career. Should Justino record her second title defense, attention will likely turn to former UFC title challenger Cat Zingano who is 2-0 under the Bellator banner after making her debut in the promotion in 2020.

Uncasville, CT — Believe it or not, Leslie Smith actually campaigned for a rematch with the fearsome Cris Cyborg. “One thing about me is that I’m not scared of anything, except for not getting the opportunity to fight and to try my hardest. I asked for this fight,” Smith revealed Friday night, shortly after the announcement that Cyborg vs. Smith 2 would headline May’s Bellator 259.

“So I’ve been wanting this fight. I asked for this fight, again. I’ve been training for this fight,” she continued, speaking backstage at the Mohegan Sun Arena to media outlets including Cageside Press. “I’ve already been working on all aspects of my MMA game. And I’m beyond excited about this opportunity.”

Cyborg and Smith first met in 2016 under the UFC banner. It did not go her way. The 140lb catchweight bout (at the time, the UFC did not have a featherweight division for women) ended a little over 90 seconds into the opening round. Cyborg took home the TKO victory.

That hasn’t discouraged Smith any, it seems. “Of course I want this fight. This is the goal of everyone who’s in MMA, is to get a title in the premiere organization,” said Smith. “Which this is, the premiere organization for my weight class, for women right now. This is the best place I could possibly be for fighting. I am beyond excited for this opportunity. I am ready to die out there. I’m willing to lose an ear. But I can guarantee that it’s going to be a very entertaining fight.”

The ear reference is a callback to UFC 180, when Smith’s cauliflower ear exploded off a punch from Jessica Eye. But more telling are her comments about Bellator being the premiere organization for her weight class. Because, frankly, it is. In recent weeks, the UFC has let former featherweight title challenger and Invicta FC champ Megan Anderson walk. Invicta, meanwhile, is in limbo, with no events announced. While the UFC showboats Amanda Nunes as a double-champ, no 145lb division has ever been built around her.

Instead, Bellator remains the only promotion with an active, competitive 145lb weight class for women. And Cyborg rules it.

There is a question, however, as to how this rematch with Cyborg will be different. And how Smith has improved in the years since that first meeting.

“Since the first time that we fought— defense was not my thing before I fought her. So it was an incredible learning experience. Literally no one, nobody before or after that has ever effected me with their power like that,” Smith admitted. “So I have been training since then to be able to control the distance, to be able to control the timing.”

“Let me tell you something about rematches,” Smith went on to add. “Almost every single time in a rematch, the person who won is like ‘yeah, what’s up, I won.’ Duh. They’re happy about it. The person who didn’t win, they’re the one studying the tape, who is like ‘how can I change this, what can I do, what can I do differently?'”

Smith has looked at all those steps with her team, she added. As to where she has improved most, Smith continued by saying “Definitely distance and timing. In general, I have much better defense. Just in general, I’m a lot more aware of it. But if I was going to say one thing that I’m a lot better at, I’m going to say it’s my Fight IQ.” Starting out in the sport, said Smith, she didn’t care about getting hit. “At some point, I realized that I should take care of my brain, and I do need to dodge things, because even if I don’t mind taking a punch so that I can throw five, refs don’t always reward that.”

The upcoming Bellator 259 has a women’s featherweight title fight as its main event.

During Friday’s Bellator 255 broadcast on Showtime, the promotion announced the return of Cris Cyborg and Leslie Smith, with both fighters on hand. The pair will serve as the main event of Bellator 259 on May 28, with Cyborg looking to make her second consecutive title defense.

Cyborg (23-2, 1NC) and Smith (12-8-1) first met in 2016 under the UFC banner, in a 140lb catchweight bout. At the time, the UFC had no featherweight division. Cyborg won the fight via TKO in the opening round.

Much has changed since that night. The UFC eventually did launch a featherweight division, only to turn it into a sideshow attraction for Cyborg, without ever actually building a division around her (they did the same with double-champ Amanda Nunes, who would shockingly knock out Cyborg in 2018). The Brazilian then signed on with Bellator, defeating Julia Budd to claim 145lb gold in her fourth major promotion in January 2020. In October at Bellator 249, she defended the belt against Arlene Blencowe.

Smith arrived in Bellator in 2019, and has posted a 2-1 record thus far. Most recently, she defeated Amanda Bell by unanimous decision. Counting her final bouts in the UFC, Smith is 4-1 since her original meeting with Cyborg.

Bellator 259 takes place May 28, 2021, and is expected to air live on Showtime. The card will take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Two additional bouts have been confirmed by the promotion for the card: Adam Piccolotti vs. Georgi Karakhanyan will take place at lightweight, and Christian Edwards vs. Ben Parrish takes place at 205lbs.

On a weekend that saw the debuts of Liz Carmouche and Cat Zingano, it would have been easy to overlook Leslie Smith’s featherweight scrap against Amanda Bell at Bellator 245. “The Peacemaker” ensured that wasn’t the case, however, earning a dominant unanimous decision against Bell.

Smith (12-8-1) entered the fight 1-1 in Bellator, off a loss to Arelene Blencowe, who will be the next woman to face featherweight champ Cris Cyborg. Back in the win column, she’s put herself in line for a higher profile fight — with Zingano and former champ Julia Budd names that immediately come to mind.

“I want to fight someone higher up. I want to fight someone who’s going to set me up to move up, and to get a little bit more out of the whole experience,” Smith said following Friday’s event, speaking to media outlets including Cageside Press.

Zingano was the name that was immediately suggested. “It would be an honor to get to fight her, [or] to fight Julia Budd,” said Smith. “I know I need to get another win before I can throw my name into the hat for the title shot, but of course that is the ultimate goal.”

It was very important to put on an impressive performance Friday, Smith added, given the last time she fought on a card with two women’s featherweight bouts, the winners were paired up. Logistically, that very much makes sense, with Cyborg already occupied.

“I hope that it’s Cat Zingano,” Smith admitted. The pair both started out in Colorado, recalled Smith. “At the time, she was Cat Albert. I totally had my eye on her. I feel like it would be a pretty cool thing of a big circle coming around if I get to— when I get to fight her. I’m going to speak it into existence: I think it’s going to be cool when I get to fight her. Hopefully that’s going to happen before this year is over.”

As for her performance Friday, Smith appeared pleased overall. “There’s some stuff that I’ve been working on for eight years, and I was able to put it together and do it in this fight,” she said.

The lack of a crowd may have worked to her advantage, she added. “I love the crowd, but I think I was able to slow things down a little more.” Going too slow, at times, was also “kind of a downfall too,” however. “I think that was one of the mistakes that I made, being able to switch from being like ‘okay I’m on the outside, I’m doing this’ and then being able to go in. I would have liked to have been able to make that switch a little faster.”

One of the big stories heading into the fight was Bell missing weight. While she tried to make amends during the face-offs ahead of the fight, saying she meant no disrespect, Smith was having none of it.

“Honestly, she didn’t make weight and I got a percentage of her purse. I get a little salty,” explained Smith. “I had some bad experiences with people not making weight. Three out of four, something like that, of the last people I’ve fought or have been lined up to fight haven’t made weight. It’s just disrespectful no matter how you look at it.”

“I know there’s a lot of different situations going on, we’re in a pandemic. I know she’s from Oregon, where there’s a lot of wild fires,” Smith allowed. “We were cool after the fight, but I would just like to be able to fight somebody who comes in like a professional, and not have any of those extra emotions, ever.”

The first of two back-to-back cards from Bellator this weekend, Friday’s Bellator 245 was a fun affair on paper. Names like Lyoto Machida (taking on Phil Davis for the second time), Ed Ruth, and Cat Zingano, in her promotional debut, dotted the main card.

The preliminary card was no less compelling. A former champion, a couple of noteworthy prospects, and a key women’s featherweight fight comprised the four early bouts at Bellator 245.

The former champ in question, Rafael Carvalho, was Bellator’s middleweight kingpin from 2015 to 2018, when he was defeated by Gegard Mousasi. Since then, Carvalho has gone 1-2, losing to Machida and the man who just recently became light heavyweight champ Vadim Nemkov. Now established as a 205lb’er, Carvalho was looking to pick up a win over prospect Alex Polizzi.

Another prospect, heavyweight Tyrell Fortune, was looking to shake off the first loss of his career, which came earlier in 2020 against Tim Johnson. He was paired up with Jack May, a veteran journeyman who had competed for BAMMA, the UFC, and PFL, among others.

Keith Lee, brother of UFC star Kevin Lee, was also in action Friday. As was Leslie Smith, looking to bounce back from a loss to Arlene Blencowe against Amanda Bell.

The preliminary card kicks off at 8:15PM ET. Check back for results — an embed of the official Bellator 245 preliminary card live stream can be found above.

Bellator 245 Preliminary Card Results

Alex Polizzi def. Rafael Carvalho by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Leslie Smith def. Amanda Bell by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Tyrell Fortune vs. Jack May ends in a No Contest (accidental groin strike), Round 1, 2:42
Keith Lee def. Vinicius Zani by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Leslie Smith takes on Amanda Bell at Bellator 245. The featherweight fight goes down on Friday, September 11, live from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The card will simulcast on DAZN as well as Paramount Network.

Smith has been quarantining in her room this week, but that is something she doesn’t seem to mind at all. Leslie Smith went through a phase of exploring the fight town, watching a movie, but now mostly hunkers down in the room to focus on the task at hand.

Pandemic Era MMA

Fortunately for Smith, the global pandemic did little to affect her preparations for this one. “I have been so lucky with this training camp. At El Nino Training Center in San Francisco, Gilbert Melendez has been coaching us. Jake Shields has been coaching us, Keri Melendez everyone knows she’s awesome. Shinju Auclair, she is here with me to corner with me.”

Smith continued, adding “I was able to go out to Brentwood at the Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy. It’s a pretty new academy. It’s a really nice academy and I get to work with Cesar out there.”

Smith is working with more women than ever before. She used to prefer sparring with men because she could go full force in training. Nowadays working with women has allowed for her to level up in a technical sense and have a greater nuance to her techniques.

Beyond working with high-level martial artists, there’s a friendly connectivity between everyone as well. “It’s really nice to be able to respect the people that I’m surrounded with,” she observed. “Shinju [Auclair] is a huge part of the community. She’s been very essential to my training camp.”

Outside of the cage, Smith has been allocating time towards Rutgers classes studying Labor and Employer relations. “I am enjoying my classes a whole lot this semester. I’m taking a writing class and a corporate governance class and a class on immigration law. Those are all subjects I’m really excited about.”

Combat Sports Labor Law

December 2021 is the expected finish line as Smith is a part-time student. Then, “The Peacemaker” plans to go to graduate school for her masters from Rutgers then move on to law school to study labor law.

The enthusiasm Smith has for this subject has been known for a while with her efforts through Project Spearhead. “It’s so fascinating. I have been super lucky all throughout this process. My first teacher of labor law has been Lucas Middlebrook, the lawyer and friend that I worked with on Project Spearhead. He’s a great teacher. Labor law is so fascinating. Employment law is so fascinating because it touches everybody”

Recent divisiveness in WWE over an edict banning third-party sponsorships for their independent contractors caught Smith’s attention and bared a ton of resemblances to MMA fighter struggles. “It seems like a lot of the MMA structure is based on pro wrestling structure. They took a lot of pages out of that book.”

Smith vs Bell

Smith mentioned how unions don’t have to create adversarial relationships with employers. They can work in concert with the sporting organizations to promote the sport at large. Some fighters are hesitant to talk about this stuff while actively competing. The importance of concurrently competing and advocating for change is certainly not lost on Leslie Smith.

“It is very important for me. If I wasn’t so adamant about trying to agitate for change for fighters than I don’t think I believe my passion for fighting would be anywhere near as strong,” she explained. “In fact, there was a period where I kind of lost my love for the sport.”

Leslie Smith added that “I had a hard time generating any enthusiasm for it because I was pretty disillusioned with a lot of the aspects of it. The opportunity to change some things and the opportunity to hopefully make things better for my community and future fighters is irresistible.”

Smith has been plying her trade as a featherweight so far in Bellator but has an interest in competing as a flyweight eventually. To have options in two divisions is not a bad place to be.

“I would love to act like I’m the sole person guiding my ship through the waters of MMA but I’m not. I’m totally not. I’m really kind of just taking what ever’s offered to me,” she said. “At first, I thought that my opportunities in Bellator were going to be at 125 and I was very ready for that. That is not what I was offered. I was offered this opportunity at 145. I’m a kind of a take what I can get and run with it kind of fighter and person.”

Bellator 245

Smith has developed additional confidence from working with Keri Melendez and it has caused a ton of development. An analytical eye and the high-level striking acumen for Melendez has helped a lot and Smith sees Keri Melendez as the best striker in MMA with all women considered.

The matchmaking between Smith and Bell is one that makes for an exciting fight on paper as well as a fight that has significance in fleshing out the featherweight contendership hierarchy.

“Amanda Bell is heavy on the striking. So I think it’s a really great opportunity for me. Getting to train with the other fighters on my team…Getting to train with such accomplished strikers and fighters. Such fast strikers and fighters. Technical, high level, and fast. I feel like there’s nothing that Amanda is going to be throwing that I’m not going to be able to see and have already been able to know how to deal with.”
