There were a couple of key connections to the MMA world at Saturday’s Misfits Boxing 9, yet another influencer-laden boxing event.

The card, which was set for the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle upon Tyne, England was headlined by Bellator MMA veteran Aaron Chalmers, a former reality TV star (Geordie Shore/Ex on the Beach) turned mixed martial artist turned boxer.

After posting a 5-2 record in MMA from 2017 to 2020, Chalmers jumped to boxing, and competed in an exhibition against Floyd Mayweather Jr. earlier this year in a “fight” that went the distance (no scores were recorded given the exhibition nature of the bout). 1-0 as a pro and with another exhibition match-up on his record, Chalmers was set to face Idris Virgo in the main event on Saturday.

Then there was Gabriel Silva, son of MMA great Anderson “The Spider” Silva, set to take on MMA personality Ben “The Bane” Davis in a match sure to get the denizens of Twitter talking.

Ben “The Bane” Davis has taken the MMA community by storm in recent years, bursting onto the scene with his witty tweets and unrivaled passion for commentating fights across the globe. While Davis, 23, is most popular for his exceptional way with words, it’ll be his hands that will be doing the talking when he goes toe-to-toe with the son of combat sports icon Anderson Silva at Misfits Boxing 009 on September 23 in Newcastle, England.

While the rising play-by-play superstar enters the fray as a massive underdog, Davis is confident that he will get the job done and effectively shock the world in his influencer boxing debut.

“I’m a guy who is consistently underestimated. I’m going to be overlooked heading into this one. And I think I’m gonna surprise a couple of people,” Davis said in an interview with Cageside Press. “I’m thinking fourth round TKO or I will get it done on the scorecards. Listen, I’m gonna be there late… I’m gonna be there when he doesn’t want me there. And when he’s sitting in between rounds and looking across, and I’m staring right back at his ass – I think I can break him.”

“The Bane” began his career by commentating Esports, or what he calls “the biggest backdoor entry to play-by-play there’s ever been.” Backdoor or not, he managed to parlay his Esports work into a highly impressive network, providing insightful play-by-play commentary for numerous high-level promotions that can be found on UFC Fight Pass. Davis worked back-to-back events to begin the month, starting with Uriah Faber’s A1 Combat in Los Angeles on September 1, before making his way to Anthony Pettis Fighting Championship (APFC) in Indiana where he called fights alongside UFC Welterweight Belal Muhammad, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, and Boston Anik, twin brother of longtime UFC commentator Jon Anik.

While it is clear that Davis has had his hands full with media work as of late, his budding play-by-play career hasn’t stopped him from launching a full fight camp in preparation for his upcoming bout with two-time kickboxing champion Gabriel Silva.

“I’m doing my camp at Arizona Combat Sports. “Showtime” Seth Wheeler will be my head coach preparing me for the fight – he’s one of the best strikers in the state,” Davis said. “I’ve already had such a fun year, this would be a great feather in the cap – to be able to go out there and execute the game plan that Seth and I are cooking up and to come out victorious – I think it’s a real possibility.”

In addition to training in his home state of Arizona, Davis and Wheeler are set to travel to Florida to get some work in with Billy Quarantillo, one of the most electrifying strikers in the UFC featherweight division. “The Bane” is well aware of the gap in fighting experience between Silva and himself, but he has been training hard and is ready to put on a show for the fans in attendance and viewers from around the world.

“It’s a mountain to climb, but I’m prepared for it. Win, lose, or draw – I’m going to go in there and leave it all in the ring,” Davis said.

Happy 30th, Jordan Griffin. Griffin, the Contender Series alum who had gone 0-2 to start his UFC career, turned 30 on Friday. The same day as the UFC Norfolk weigh-in. Come Saturday, however, he had a stellar technical submission of promotional newcomer TJ Brown. That performance was enough to win him one of two Performance of the Night awards on the Fight Night card.

The second Performance bonus went to Megan Anderson, for her finish of Norma Dumont. Another octagon newcomer, Dumont found herself on the wrong end of an Anderson right hand early in their women’s featherweight fight. That put her name in the hat for a shot at Amanda Nunes, who reportedly wants to defend her 145lb title later this year at UFC 250 in Brazil.

Of course, Felicia Spencer, who also won on the night, might have something to say about that.

Fight of the Night, meanwhile, went to Kyler Phillips and Gabriel Silva. Phillips, yet another newcomer, and Silva, brother of Erick Silva, went the distance. In the end, all three judges gave it to Phillips, 30-27.

Attendance at the event, which aired on ESPN+ stateside, was 7,098 for a total gate of $402,958. All four bonus winning fighters, meanwhile, will pick up an extra $50,000 for their efforts.

What is the Matrix? The answer is out there — and Kyler Phillips was looking to show it Saturday night. Kyler “Matrix” Phillips was making his UFC debut, just weeks out from a highlight reel head kick under the LFA banner earlier this month. That went down on February 1. Now, at UFC Norfolk on February 29, he was set to take on Gabriel Silva.

Silva, the younger brother of former UFC star Erick Silva, had impressed in a debut loss to Ray Borg last year. While he didn’t come out with the win, he did go the distance with the former title challenger.

So what is the matrix? Unfortunately, no one can be told what The Matrix is. You’ll have to see it for yourself. Or, you know, read this recap. We’ll stop with the movie puns now.

Silva was the aggressor early on in this one, but Phillips was doing a good job landing off his back foot. Silva was walking Phillips down, while Phillips was landing on the outside. ‘Matrix’ was just doing a lot more, having his way teeing off on Silva but Silva wasn’t fazed. Phillips was throwing a lot of head kicks but was also doing better slipping punches and countering on Silva. Basically just putting a lot of output on him. Silva was able to get a takedown at the end of the round but Phillips did get back to his feet quickly.

Silva tried to get Phillips to the mat to start round two, taking the back of Phillips while standing. Phillips landed on top and would take the back standing himself in a back and forth affair in the clinch. Silva was able to finally get Silva to the mat. It didn’t last long as Silva was poor with position and Phillips got top position. The round came to a close with some good hammer fists landed by Phillips.

📺Watch it live on ESPN+ pic.twitter.com/pwezFemlCD

Silva was looking great to start round three, landing a combination of stikes followed up with a wheel kick and a flying knee. That didn’t last. Soon Phillips was having his way with Silva on the feet, yet he still took Silva down with a well-timed takedown. A failed anaconda choke from Phillips resulted in Silva getting back to his feet. That didn’t last long either though, as Silva got another takedown. Phillips was just too much on the mat moving effortlessly floating on top while landing good punches. Silva made his way to the feet at the bell, just too little too late.

After a rough two years in and outside the cage, ‘The Tazmexican Devil’ Ray Borg got back on the board with a nice win over tough prospect Gabriel Silva at UFC San Antonio.

Debuting in the UFC is a big deal. Doing so against a former title-challenger is an even bigger deal. That’s the task that was ahead of promotional newcomer Gabriel Silva heading into UFC San Antonio. The 24-year-old Brazilian was 7-0 before the event, coming off of a first-round finish in his Legacy Fighting Alliance debut in March. This run of bouts is the first time Silva has fought twice in one year in his professional MMA career, which dates back to 2011.

Silva’s opponent, Ray Borg, is fighting for the second time in 2019 as well. That’s after a turbulent 2018 which saw Borg have two fights cancelled. He’s fought just once since his title-fight loss to Demetrious Johnson in October of 2017. In his previous fight this year, Borg missed weight, even after making the move to bantamweight from flyweight. That marked the third time Borg had missed weight in his last six bouts. At UFC San Antonio, Borg had the opportunity to put all of that behind him and get back in the win column after back-to-back losses.

Round 1

Borg, being more well known for his grappling, played a large part trying to get the Brazilian on his back. A flurry from Silva forced Borg to push him against the fence to work to the legs of Silva. Borg was the one who was taken down going for the guillotine, to allow Silva to get the single leg. Borg, who’s always tough to keep down, was thrown down to the mat briefly by Silva a few more times by the end of the round. The scrambles of Borg kept him out of danger. But he was the one having to fight defensively.

Cageside Press Scored the Round a 10-9 for Silva

Round 2

Borg opened up the second round by immediately hitting a double leg takedown. Silva, the longer guy, showed his craft as he quickly reversed positions putting Borg on his back. In many of Borg’s fights, you will see the excellent scrambles, as Silva did have the back. But Borg turned toward him, getting on top. Borg ended the round with him on the back of the Brazilian in dominant position.

Cageside Press Scored the Round a 10-9 for Borg

Round 3

Borg was the much fresher fighter going into the last round, with Silva breathing hard. The constant pressure and cardio of Borg broke Silva throughout round three. Not only with slick grappling, but with four takedowns, securing the round. Borg did a great job clasping his hands together getting the double leg, and making Silva carry his weight in the final round.

UFC San Antonio has beefed up its card with a lightweight showdown between Dan Hooker and James Vick, and a bantamweight scrap involving Ray Borg and newcomer Gabriel Silva.

My San Antonio reported the additions to UFC San Antonio.

Dan Hooker and James Vick are two of the taller 155ers you’ll see, with Vick coming in at 6’3″ and Hooker standing at 6’0″. Hooker moved up to lightweight in 2017 and subsequently went on a tear. The New Zealander rattled off four consecutive stoppages, with first-round knockouts against Ross Pearson, Jim Miller, and Gilbert Burns, and a third-round submission against Marc Diakiese. His run came to an end at the hands of Edson Barboza in December of last year.

Vick is also looking to find success once again, as he has lost two consecutive fights after starting his UFC career at 9-1. “The Texecutioner” saw his four-fight win streak come to an end when he was knocked out by Justin Gaethje in August 2018. He was unable to rebound four months ago, dropping a decision to Paul Felder.

Ray Borg will look for a stroke of good luck when he steps in the cage against Gabriel Silva. “The Tazmexican Devil” had three fights canceled in 2018 due to various issues including an eye injury that was a result of Conor McGregor’s bus attack at UFC 223, and his newborn son’s diagnosis with hydrocephalus. He then returned to the cage in March of this year, missing the bantamweight limit, and losing a controversial decision to newcomer Casey Kenney after having his opponent change twice in the month leading up to the fight.

Gabriel Silva made his US debut in a big way in March. He knocked out Jake Heffernan in the first round at LFA 63, which was attended by Dana White for his Lookin’ for a Fight program. Silva was signed backstage as an 8-0 Brazilian prospect, and now he’ll make his promotional debut in July.

As it stands, UFC San Antonio currently has 11 fights to its name, but none have been designated as the main event. Joining the two aforementioned bouts on the ESPN card is a heavyweight tilt between disgraced former NFL star Greg Hardy and up-and-comer Juan Adams. Top bantamweight contender Raquel Pennington will also return to the cage for the first time in 2019 to take on Irene Aldana. The event takes place on July 20 from the AT&T Center in Texas, the home of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.

Gabriel Silva caught Dana White’s attention during the filming of an episode of Lookin’ for a Fight, and was signed to the UFC after his performance at LFA 63.

On March 29, Dana White went to Belton, Texas to LFA 63 to film an episode of Lookin’ for a Fight. After the event, he would invite Derrick Krantz to the Contender Series. In addition to that, he signed Gabriel Silva straight to the UFC after a first-round knockout against Jake Heffernan.

How Will Gabriel Silva Fare in the UFC:

Gabriel Silva, the brother of former top prospect Erick Silva, really proved he is one to look out for when he beat Kamil Lebowski, who was a top prospect at the time. Silva is improving each fight and only getting better. On the feet, he is a very good striker, marching forward and firing right hook after left hook over and over again with a lot of power and excellent precision. He is always moving forward landing but he can also shoot in and get the takedown because he does very well with his wrestling. On top, he has good BJJ as he knows how to pass guard and transition to better positions but can unload ground and pound also. Silva isn’t too technical with his striking but is a good counter striker.

It’s a big weekend in the MMA world and there are plenty of up-and-comers in action who are worth your attention.

Hex Fight Series 18 | Friday | Australia

Welterweight, Kitt Campbell (10-3)

Kitt Campbell is well-rounded overall. On the feet, he has power in his hands and is quite explosive and quick. He is good in the clinch throwing relentless knees and lethal elbows too. His wrestling is good as well with solid entrances to his takedowns leading to good follow-throughs. On top, Campbell has good ground-and-pound and is a submission threat. He moves well for a big man. At times, he is stationary but once on the mat, he is fluid with his movement. He fights Beau Rawiri (7-5-1), who is not on his level.

CES 55 | Friday | Connecticut

Welterweight, Jeremiah Wells (6-1-1)

Just a year ago, Jeremiah Wells was only 3-1-1 and on the cusp of turning 32. Now, even at 32, he’s got a good record and is the current CES title holder. Wells is a very explosive fighter who will attack in bursts and is willing to throw flying knees and superman punches. He also has some decent wrestling to fall back on. Overall, he’s very fun to watch and a win here may just earn him a spot on the Contender Series. He fights Vinicius de Jesus (7-2) who is a good test for Wells.

Bantamweight, Tony Gravely (17-5)

Before transitioning over to MMA, Gravely was a standout wrestler in high school who was All-State four times, an All-American three times, and a two-time state and regional champion. He also became a two-time conference champ at Appalachian State University. His wrestling is solid as he shows a lot of quickness and athleticism when he shoots in with a near-perfect takedown percentage. On the mat, he is at home as he has perfect control while always being in the right place when there are scrambles. On top of that, his ground-and-pound has fight-ending capabilities. He is a bull on the feet, pressing forward and while he doesn’t have a knockout in his career, he does possess heavy hands. However, they are used more to close the distance. He fights Darren Mina (10-7) who is on a two-fight skid.

*Also watch for Fabio Cheran and William Knight on this card.

Bellator 219 | Friday | California

Bantamweight, Dominic Mazzotta (14-2)

Obviously, his wrestling is his bread and butter. Dominic Mazzotta has judo, trip takedowns, slams, double legs, and just tearing his opponent down to the mat. He has decent ground and pound, but it’s when he takes the back that he is most dangerous, with seven submissions coming via rear-naked choke. On the feet, he doesn’t do much, but he has good power in his hands and solid kickboxing. His only two losses are to former UFC champ Cody Garbrandt and Bellator contender AJ McKee. He fights Shawn Bunch (8-3), who just beat Joe Warren, so this is a big fight for Mazzotta.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37u5t6EgknM

LFA 63 | Friday | Texas

Featherweight, Jake Heffernan (7-0)

Nicknamed “The Grinder,” he holds true to that title. Jake Heffernan will take no time putting his opponent to the cage, eliminating space and tiring his opponent out. He is a good wrestler who has excellent level changes with well-executed double leg takedowns, but does a great job of using trips to get his opponents to the mat as well. Heffernan has good jiu-jitsu where he is more dangerous with submissions off his back, as he is always active. Heffernan also has some good ground and pound where he loves the elbows. He does tend to slow a bit, but that’s because he is always working. He fights Gabriel Silva (6-0), who we’ll break down below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd1eOi_R1zs

Featherweight, Gabriel Silva (6-0)

Gabriel Silva is the younger brother of former UFC fighter and current Bellator fighter, Erick Silva. On the feet, he is a very good striker marching forward firing the right hook after the left hook over and over again with a lot power and excellent precision landing on the chin. He is always moving forward landing but he can also shoot in and get the takedown cause he does very well with his wrestling. On top, he has good BJJ he knows how to pass guard and transition to better positions but can unload ground and pound also. Overall a solid all-around fighter but this is his first fight in two years. He fights the aforementioned Jake Heffernan (7-0).

Middleweight, Kailan Hill (4-0)

Hill is only 4-0 but he also went undefeated as an amateur at 3-0. The Puerto Rico native is a very explosive fighter with a high finishing rate, putting all but one of his opponents away. Hill has a powerful and very quick head kick he loves to throw. He does have a problem spamming the head kick and not setting it up enough. So far he has gotten through his fights with pure athleticism, but he does have a good future. He fights Jhonoven Pati (4-2), who is a banger, so expect a finish.

M-1 Challenge 101 | Saturday | Kazakhstan

Light Heavyweight, Khadis Ibragimov (7-0)

The Russia native has a background in Combat Sambo as he is the former World Universal Combat Champion, the winner of the Russian Combat-Sambo Cup, and a European champion. He’s still very green and relies heavily on his strength and athleticism. He needs to work on not being so wild with his striking and needs to not allow his opponents to push him against the ropes as much. In the clinch, Ibragimov does utilize trips and has excellent judo throws he likes to use. He fights Rafal Kijanczuk (7-0), who will be broken down below.

Light Heavyweight, Rafal Kijanczuk (7-0)

The 26-year-old Polish fighter brings an undefeated record with wins over quality competition over more experienced foes. He is a legit finisher with all seven wins via KO/TKO and four of them under 20 seconds. He’s very athletic and has very good footwork as he cuts angles and explodes in very well. He hits like a truck and has shown pretty solid cardio as well, so it looks like he is the real deal. He fights the aforementioned Khadis Ibragimov (7-0).

ACA 94 | Saturday | Russia

Lightweight, Ali Bagov (27-10)

Bagov is a well-experienced fighter at only 28 years of age with 37 pro fights to his name. In those 27 wins, Bagov has beat guys like Bubba Jenkins, Eduard Vartanyan, Leandro Silva, Herdeson Batista, and current UFC fighter Ramazan Emeev. Bagov is totally a grappler/wrestler. He doesn’t have much on the feet, but his ability to close the distance and level-change to get the fight to the mat is quite smooth.

His nickname is “The Hulk” and it suits him well as he is very strong and tough to get away from when he gets ahold of his opponents. Bagov’s jiu-jitsu is slick as displayed by his 22 wins by submission. His submission threats are complimented by heavy ground-and-pound. He fights Khusein Khaliev (19-1), who will be broken down below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mZ17x9vIZo

Lightweight, Khusein Khaliev (19-1)

Khusein Khaliev is a fantastic, well-rounded fighter. He has 11 wins by submission, but it’s his stand up that really illustrates his skill. The way he strings together his kicks, including his spinning kicks, in with his combinations is amazing. On the feet, he mainly relies on his kickboxing. He attacks every limb and has the ability to use spinning kicks, which he executes better than most fighters. He has good wrestling but he’s not the guy to pick his opponent up and slam him to the mat. He’s very good at timing his takedowns and getting trips. On the mat, he has excellent control and at times, he has relentless ground-and-pound. The prospect has a good submission base with 10 submissions. He fights the aforementioned Ali Bagov (27-10).

Heavyweight, Evgeny Goncharov (12-2)

Evgeny Goncharov is another solid heavyweight prospect out of Russia. On the feet, he does have some power, but on the mat is where he wants to be. Goncharov is an excellent wrestler who will get the body lock and get huge power takedowns, showing how strong he is. On top, he has some slick grappling for a big guy, but his ground-and-pound is his best aspect where he throws at a high rate and can do that all fight. He fights Mukhamad Vakhaev (7-4-1), who is good but I think Evgeny gets the win.

Bantamweight, Goga Shamatava (14-4)

Goga Shamatava is a striker at heart. He has good kickboxing and mixes his attacks with body strikes and spinning techniques. He has good, long strikes from a distance, often picking his opponent apart. But in the clinch is where he thrives with excellent Muay Thai. His very dangerous and relentless knees are his best weapon by far. He does need to work on his takedown defense, but he is very sound off his back and has shown good control of his opponent. Offensively, he has good jiu-jitsu and holds five submission wins, and is riding a 12-fight streak. He fights Rasul Albaskhanov (8-3).

Featherweight, Askhab Zulaev (5-0)

Askhab Zulaev is another legit up-and-coming Russian prospect. On the feet, he is excellent at distance using a range of kicks, even spinning kicks, often. The Russian is a skilled kickboxer with explosiveness, falling in love with his flying knee. Some other nice qualities he has are solid cardio with the pace he throws, and excellent takedown defense. Zulaev has some decent wrestling, but his ground and pound is cutting with the elbows he throws. He fights Otavio dos Santos (12-3), who is a big test for Zulaev.

SFT 10 | Saturday | Brazil

Welterweight, Diego Bianchini (5-0)

Diego Bianchini brings a Capoeira style on the feet as he throws a lot of switch kicks and spinning kicks. He is very explosive and a human highlight reel as he throws caution to the wind. He has a variety of superman punches, crazy elbows from odd angles, and he is very quick. The Brazilian is also good on the mat. He has slick jiu-jitsu and is dangerous on top or bottom with three submission wins. Bianchini, though, hasn’t fought in two years so he may be rusty. He fights Kevem Felipe (5-2), who is coming off a loss.

One Championship | Sunday | Japan

Flyweight, Angela Lee (9-0)

Arguably the best female fighter outside the UFC, Angela Lee has very good judo and fights like a vet on the mat. Lee has really good control and can go from position to position easily and has with six of her nine wins by submission. Lee’s grappling is her most advanced aspect, as she has excellent back takes and finishing ability with the RNC but is dangerous everywhere. She even holds a rare twister submission victory. Her striking has been improving a lot and only getting better. She fights Jingnan Xiong (13-1), who will be broken down below.

Flyweight, Jingnan Xiong (13-1)

With Jingnan Xiong, there isn’t much technical ability nor really any defense all around. But what does have is toughness and heavy aggression and that alone has won her the One Championship title. On the feet, she does get wild but her always pressing forward style, throwing constant hooks, really breaks her opponents down as she can take damage to deliver some of her own. Her takedown defense is also an issue that could need some work, but she does scramble well and has never fought off her back too long. Xiong does have decent wrestling and on top, has good grappling and solid ground and pound. She fights Angela Lee (9-0).

Lightweight, Garry Tonon (3-0)

Garry Tonon is well-known in the world of BJJ as he holds accomplishments such as IBJJF Pan-American No-Gi Champion, IBJJF World No-Gi Champion, EBI lightweight champion, and much more here. Tonon has looked stellar in his MMA career, and has even looked great on his feet. Tonon uses nice footwork, landing one-twos and landing with a lot of output while moving in-and-out. He showed good wrestling getting double-leg and trip takedowns. The mat is his world, as he finds dominant positions easily and while his ground and pound is very good, he is obviously a big submission threat. He fights Anthony Engelen (8-5), who Tonon should beat.
