Elite Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Bia Mesquita returned to the octagon on Saturday night to face fellow bantamweight Montserrat Rendon at UFC Vegas 114 inside the Meta Apex.
Mesquita (6-0) continued her undefeated professional run in her last outing, earning a submission victory over Irina Alekseeva in her UFC debut. While the matchup with Montserrat Rendon may not be the most high-profile bout on the card, it presents another opportunity for Mesquita to further establish herself in the UFC’s bantamweight division.
Rendon (7-1) holds a 2–1 record in the UFC and is coming off a split-decision victory over Alice Pereira last September. A second consecutive win could position her for a higher-profile matchup in the bantamweight division.
Round 1 – Rendon came out aggressively, applying early pressure and throwing heavy shots until Mesquita landed a clean counter that dropped her. Mesquita quickly followed her to the mat and unleashed a barrage of ground-and-pound.
Rendon did her best to scramble back to her feet, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist dragged her down again, advanced to mount, and resumed the ground assault. Rendon fought hard to survive, yet Mesquita continued to batter her opponent while searching for the finish.
Eventually, Rendon exposed her back during the scramble. Mesquita wasted no time taking the position, securing the choke, and finishing the fight in the opening round.
With the victory, Bia Mesquita continues to prove she could become a serious threat in the UFC’s women’s bantamweight division.
