PFL light heavyweight Antonio Carlos Jr punched his ticket to the finals with a decision victory over Simeon Powell at the PFL World Tournament in Chicago.
“It’s good to be back. Made (my) way to the finals. I hope we’re going to get another belt,” Carlos Jr. told reporters including Cageside Press at his post-fight scrum.
Carlos Jr. (18-6) faced a younger Powell with fight fans thinking this would be a grappler vs. striker type matchup.
“It’s MMA man. It’s not a wrestling match or a Jiu Jitsu match. It’s MMA you got to mix it up. I try taking him down, he did a pretty good job defending the takedowns, he got long legs. So it was hard,” he said.
“He did a great job. I didn’t expect that, but I feel great.”
During the post-fight presser his finals opponent was yet to be determined, but Sullivan Cauley scored an upset victory over Phil Davis later that night.
“Don’t really matter. They’re both good fighters, good athletes,” said Carlos Jr.
“Whoever it is I just have to be ready for it.”
