Two UFC bantamweights looked to right the ship at UFC Edmonton as Serhiy Sidey took on Garrett Armfield on Saturday night.
Sidey (10-2) came off an unsuccessful UFC debut in January. The Canadian fighter looks to have a re-do of sorts on home ground at UFC Edmonton.
Armfield (10-4) made a much quicker turnaround than his opponent coming off a loss in June. That fight snapped a two-fight win streak that Armfield was hoping to build into a ranked opponent.
Round 1 Sidey kicked things off using his length to keep Armfield at range attacking with lunging jabs to the body, and then kicks to the head and body. He mixed it up well with Armfield opting to try to make it ugly and punch his way into landing something big.
Armfield shot in for a takedown, but got stuck in a tight anaconda choke. Armfield was able to survive it, and Sidey let it go as to not burn his arms out. Armfield shot right in for a takedown, and slammed Sidey to the canvas. He was unable to do anything with it and Sidey got to his feet and came out firing.
Round 2 Armfield came out with a lot of pressure on Sidey and landing combinations. Sidey went at him with kicks to the body and then hands up top, but Armfield was not shaken. The rest of the round was a back and forth between Armfield looking to take him down and Sidey trying to keep it standing.
Round 3 Armfield stayed on his aggressive game plan and shot, and scored, multiple take downs. Every time he shot in however he was met with a guillotine attempt which forced him to bail on the position a few times.
The fight ended with Armfield on the back looking to secure a choke, but he ran out of time.
Official Result: Serhiy Sidey def. Garrett Armfield via Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)
