UFC women’s strawweight Cynthia Calvillo continues to struggle with her weight, and struggle overall.
This time, however, trouble at the scales has cost her a fight.
Calvillo (9-6-1), once considered a potential star with the UFC, hit the scales extremely heavy on Friday, weighing in at 119lbs for her bout with Piera Rodriguez. Shortly after, promotion officials confirmed the fight was off.
It is the third time Calvillo has missed the mark for the strawweight division. In 2018, she was two pounds over for a bout with Poliana Botelho. A year later, Calvillo was heavy again, clocking in at a whopping 120.5 pounds for a fight with Marina Rodriguez. That bout moved forward, and ended in a draw. Following the weight debacle, however, Calvillo made the move up to 125lbs.
Her time as a flyweight did not go smoothly. Currently on a five-fight skid, Cynthia Calvillo piled up losses against the likes of Jessica Andrade, Andre Lee, and others, then returned to 115lbs in her last bout, losing once again to Loopy Godinez.
Calvillo’s only win in years came opposite Jessica Eye, in Cynthia’s flyweight debut. Given the current skid she’s on, Calvillo’s latest misstep may spell the end of her UFC career.
The 36-year old was not alone in her weight management issues on Friday, as a full four fighters missed weight for the Fight Night event. All other fights remain intact, however.
