Mateusz Gamrot Looks To Neutralize Fiziev Stand Up, Wants To Test Wrestling Against Makhachev

Las Vegas, NV – All UFC lightweights are chasing the champion and Mateusz Gamrot is no different, but he’ll need to get past Rafael Fiziev at UFC Vegas 79 on Saturday night first before he challenges for anything.

“I am only interested, one guy in this lightweight division, he’s (a) wrestler. He’s Islam Makhachev,” Gamrot told reporters on Wednesday.

“I believe he will win with Charles Oliveira, and I hope we meet in the future maybe. Next year or two years.”

In a meeting of high-level wrestlers Gamrot believes he would best Makhachev, but admitted he won’t be completely sure until he meets him in the octagon.

“I think so (my wrestling is better than Makhachev’s). We’ll see. I have to meet him in the octagon and fight with him and then we’ll get the answer. In my opinion I am the best wrestler in lightweight division. I’ve taken down everybody,” he said.

At UFC Vegas 79 he faces Fiziev in the main event in a classic striker vs. grappler bout.

“He’s really dangerous opponent. High level, world class striker, but I believe I am better all-around fighter. To be honest I don’t care because, of course I have much respect (for) Rafa, but my wrestling skills kill every striker,” said Gamrot.

“(I’m not afraid of exchanging) punch and kick with Rafa, but I think the key to winning this fight will be stamina, conditioning, of course MMA skills, and mental strength. I believe I have (the) advantage (in those categories).”
