The lone fighter to miss weight for UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia was New Zealand’s Shane Young, not doing himself any favours coming into his match-up with Gabriel Miranda.

The would-be featherweight was looking to snap a three-fight skid that almost certainly had his job on the line; Miranda meanwhile was seeking to bounce back from a loss in his promotional debut to Benoit Saint-Denis. Up a weight class, no less.

To begin the fight Young looked to put on the forward pressure but just a few seconds in he found Miranda on his back. It came by Young throwing a kick that was caught by ‘Fly’ Miranda.

Once the fight hit the mat, the 33-year-old locked in the body triangle and started hunting for the rear-naked-choke. From there he wriggled his arms under the neck of Young and proceeded to put him to sleep, picking up his 16th career submission.

Gabriel Miranda managed to bounce back from his loss to Saint-Denis with an extremely impressive victory over the home country fighter. The move seemed to be a very sensible one for him as he moved back down to featherweight, which shown to be his more comfortable weight class.

Unfortunately for Young, it’ll seemingly be the end of his UFC tenure as he is now winless in four fights.

After his win, Miranda said in his Octagon interview: “The featherweight division has a big problem because I’m here right now.”

Official Result: Gabriel Miranda def. Shane Young by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 1, 0:59
